I will be completely honest, I have always thought or a seat post shim as abit of a bodge, now I've a situation in which one would be handy 😆 basically I've a voodoo bizango with a dieing 31.6 brand x dropper, I've a spare 30.9 oneup v2 dropper, could I safely use a shim? USE have 100mm shims that ends slightly bellow the top tube (couldn't find any longer than 10cm?), rough measuring ill have 19cm in the frame. OK to use or just buy the correct size post?
Yeah. I'll post you one of them foc if you want.
I've USEd (hehe) them for years. No problems.
Yes, they're fine
Been using a 30.9 dropper in a 31.6 hardtail frame with shim for years with no problem
I,er, use a USE shim, i have done for several years, and I’m really heavy.
So I’ll say it’s fine.
Giant used to ship bikes from the factory with 27.2 mm seatposts and shims. I've been shimming seatposts for 20 years without any problems.
I've never seen anybody making shims longer than 10 cm. That's generally a safe insertion length anyway, as long as it extends below the top tube. If it's too short, you could get a second shim and grind off the lip, then bond it to the end of the seatpost. That would give you one shim high up, at the top of the seattube, and another one right at the bottom of the seatpost. Probably just some blue Loctite or something to bond it because you'll need to be able to remove it easily.
Well I think that's answered my question. 😆 Thanks everyone
I used drinks can as shim material very successfully on a couple of weird sized frames in the past too.
I like the thermoplastic shims as there is no chance of the post seizing in the frame.
Unfortunately there is one specific size I need and it's the only one in the range that's alloy!

I grease the outside of the shim, sand the inside of the shim, and degrease the seatpost. The shim will grip the seatpost but be easy to remove from the frame.
