Was there ever any change in geometry, material or weight for the normal 26"? Any comments on their suitability as an 'all round' use bike (less the pannier mounts which I've decided I'll live without) with 100mm corrected rigid forks?

Trying to decide whether stalking EBay/classifieds is worthwhile or if I should just bite the bullet and buy one new (Tesco 0% for 13 months... yes, I have that little disposable income at the mo :-))

Original were Scandium, dropouts also changed at one point.

first couple of runs were scandium with geared dropouts.

then slot dropouts without scandium (that'd be aluminium)

now geared dropouts in aluminium.

Anyone ridden both and got an opinion?

I did think they were Scandium originally, but I couldn't see a point at which they cut over.. plus I've no idea if it'd make a bit of difference in a blind taste testing.

It would make no difference IMO. Can only comment on the 29er, but if I was after and all round rigid, lightweight, it would be top of my list. I'm very tempted to get a annodised black vert dropout one to put away for later and before they change it to some psychadelic (sp) colour!!

i've got an original scandidlium one from about 2006. It rides great as an XC and trail bike, although i run mine with F100s up front. They are a definitely a bit more "wheels on the ground" though. You'll also want to run an 80mm stem on an 18" as they have very long TTs.

I had an original scandium frame until it was stolen (btw, I think only two or three of the main triangle tubes were ever scandium, the rear was always a more common aluminium alloy). I replaced it with a newer all-aluminium version and built it up with almost identical components. Apart from slightly rougher looking welding on the newer version you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference, I certainly couldn't feel any change in handling or ride quality.

Also, the slot dropout version is the one with brake bosses on the chainstay, all the others are in the traditional position on the seatstay. Prehaps doesn't mean anything, I've never owned one, but just pointing it out for your info.
