Are my tyres ****ed?
It's like this on both tyres right round. I've had them a year now and I did some decent mileage on them but not enough to warrant this surely?
Pressure wise I'm running then around 80psi
Is it dangerous to ride with them like that

that looks like age rather than 'worn out', hard to tell from the angle of the pic but it doesn't look like the centre tread is that worn down or squared off, how many miles have they done?
do you always keep them at decent pressure or have you run with them soft for any length of time?

also, where are you storing the bike as UV can degrade tyres quite quickly...

Is it dangerous to ride with them like that

probably not, I'd certainly keep using them (on a commuter/town bike) while keeping an eye on them, it looks like read degradation rather than carcass damage so unlikely to have a huge blowout or anything, but then, it's your risk appetite that's important not mine!

If you don't change them and they let you down when you're 30 miles from home how stupid will you feel?
I'd guess you've been running them under inflated (causing the sidewalls to flex too much) , but I'm always wrong.

They look like they've been ridden under-inflated. If they were mine I'd get some new ones.

Age wise there less than 12 months old, always ran them between 80-90psi
Stored in my integral garage
Could It be a quality issue?

That's only the outside rubber covering. As long as it's not peeling off the carcass anywhere, I'd look inside to see if there's any signs of damage, (very unlikely) then continue to ride them.

I'd maybe relegate them to a 'spare set', but as above it looks like just the outer layer, doesn't sound like UV damage due to milage and inside storage.. Have you considered emailing the pictures to schwalbe customer service? See what they say.

I've just emailed schwalbe, see what they say and go from there.

Thanks for all the help

I had nothing but problems with Schwalbe, there was major cracking with a few hundred miles on them. Emailed Schwalbe and to their credit they told me to post them back and they sent out a new set, with free tubes to cover my postage. A few hundred miles later the same thing happened. Binned em and have had no trouble with my new (Michelin) replacements.

Get some Veloflex Open Corsas from Ribble, £54 a pair. You will never want any other tyre after those.

Some Schwalbe's are known for doing that, it wouldn't bother me as long as they stayed that size

All my Schwalbe road tyres have done this (OK, I've only had Ultremos and One's), They've been fine to ride on and the cracks started to appear within a couple of hundred miles. They're stored in the garage in the dark and inflated to 100psi.

I'd ride them, but keep a spare tube and tyre boot handy. Schwalbes usually let you know they're unhappy using multiple punctures! Just keep an eye on the wear indicator if there's one on the tyre. Should be a little dimple somewhere.

I would not ride them. What would happen if one blew out while you were hooning down a hill at 45 mph? I check my tyres frequently and have found defects in the past just by a visual inspection.

They'll be fine, just don't go round corners.

I've got a pair of Specialized Nimbus tyres that have gone like that but slightly worse. They're on my runaround bike so it doesn't really go much further than 5 miles at a time. One tyre is only a year old but began to show the signs about six months ago, the other one is about three years old and hasn't gotten any worse. It's probably because of a cheap compound used, and they're rubbish in the wet as well.

The same as if a tyre blew out at 45mph for another, more realistic, reason. 😀
