Just popped my forks out to replace my headset, which was feeling a bit rough and discovered my steerer is scored.
This is a pic of the forks with the crown race removed, the scoring is just above where it was. Not sure what has happened as the headset didn't have play as such.
The scoring aint just cosmetic, I can feel a good 0.5mm ish lip between the rubbed and the black part of the steerer
Can you get the steerer on revs changed?
You have to change the steerer/crown/stanchion as one unit.
To be honest, I wouldn't ride that myself.
I'd be worried about what caused it too
Ah nuts I thought as much
obviously the headset was a little more gubbed than I thought, maybe part of the bearing race bit came away? I didn't really pay any attention when I pulled all the headset bits out.
I assume a steerer/crown/stanchion replacement puts the beyond economical repair?
Probably around £120......
RRP on the csu unit is £208.99 ( 😕 ) I can do them cheaper but bear in mind the bushes may need changing too plus you have labour costs. Even doing it at near to cost price you are getting into the area of a cheap new fork.
looks like it's Gypsy Glen, Glentress and Innerleithen on the rigid steel forks this weekend then !
