My mate is doing Velothon on his derailleur geared Moulton. Are they appreciably slower than normal road bikes?
faster with the little wheels, wasn't there a load of speed records set with them in the way back when?
Why would they be?
In brief, no, though the rider's position is the main thing that determines aero and thus speed.
IIRC a speed record was set on a fairing'd one in the 60s/70s.
In normal riding, I mean, with hills and all. He says his Moulton is slower than his nice road bike, and it's something like 25lbs in weight wihch is lardy.
John Woodburn broke the Cardiff to London record on a Moulton averaging 26mph for 162 miles
It may well feel slower, but it won't be significantly slower, unless it's got heavy tires or something
It might depend on the type of Moulton. I think they make some cheap* heavier ones branded as APB as well as the beautiful 531 tubed jobbies that set the speed records and cost about the same as a Cornish village.
*cheap being a relativity term, obviously.
Getting his excuses in.
I doubt I have a road bike lighter than 25 lb .All mine are steel of some sort usually with a Brooks saddle so not light
Not sure what model it is.. it's black though.

red ones are faster
Might be faster with some fairings in between those frame trusses.
