Looking to replace my rear wheel, have settled on a pro 2 evo hub but can't decide which rim would be best. Current options are:
- WTB frequency i25 (cheapest total price, i23 isn't an option on crc)
- Hope tech enduro
- Stans flow ex (hope and stans are same price, £30 more than WTB)
I use a big tyre on my hardtail in the summer but normally fit a 2.0 mud-x in the depths of winter - will this work with a 25mm internal width rim? I am looking at the bigger/stronger end of the spectrum as my history of pinch flats (solved with tubeless) hints I am not kind on rear wheels.
I would consider Mavic but there is a huge choice and I'm not sure which is best for me.

edit - coming from Superstar AMX 21mm internal width

i25 is pretty sturdy, impressed with mine and just as good as stans for tubeless etc. But not light. I don't see any isue with the mud x tbh but I don't think I've ever had narrower than 2.2 on mine.

Worst that will happen with a wide rim/narrow tyre combo is the tyre will take on a square profile, might be beneficial in some situations like straight line mud plugging but feel weird trying to lean into corners.

For the small amount of pleasure I get MTBing in the winter versus the huge enjoyment I get in the summer I'd go for the wide rims and not be fussed how they handled a 2.0 mud tyre.

FYI in Mavics range the first number usually indicates quality so a 3xx will usually be cheaper and pin jointed whereas a 7xx will usually be more expensive, lighter and weld jointed.
The next two numbers indicate width, so a 521 is a mid quality series rim that has a 21mm internal width...a 317 is a cheaper rim with only 17mm internal with...a 729 is higher up the range and has a 29mm internal width.

When it goes to pot is where Mavic start calling their rims Deemax, Crossmax, Enduromax etc....then you need to go to their site and research the rim.
I had 521s on a previous bike, they were mid priced, reasonable width (21mm) and bombproof, loved them and have heard others on here say the same.

I'd go with the i25, if you're concerned about width avoid the Flow-ex as it has a near 30mm internal width!

As above the i25 is like a Flow only cheaper and something of an animal more suited to 2.35+ tyres. 2.4 schwalbe 2.5 minion sit really well. Have also got some i23s and they work well with more modest tyres in the 2.25 and below category. Surprisngly noticeable how a 2.25 looks ready to explode on the i25. For 2.0 mud-x the i23 is more than enough imo

Some good info on Mavic there Deviant, cheers! To be honest I am moving away from superstar to hope for all the usual reasons, plus their switch hubs are basically all out of stock at the moment (mine is broken).
I'm currently running a huge 2.4 Ardent but not a huge fan so will probably end up back on a 2.3 ground control which is fairly big itself. From the responses I'm leaning towards the smaller Hope tech enduro, I just haven't really found any strong praise of them on here compared to the other two options, anyone got experience of them?
Also, votes on what colour hub would suit a duck egg soul?

I have the Hopes, had them for about 9 months so far without a hint of trouble - and I'm heavy and sometimes clumsy. Easy to set up tubeless too, with Maxxis tyres anyway.

OK that's good to hear!
Mavic EN423 are tempting me now, 110g heavier but £45 cheaper than hope tech for a CRC build, being UST hopefully some of that weight is offset by no need for rim tape

The rim tape doesn't weigh enough to register on my scales but I'm going to guess it at 1 gram.

The 423 have a UST bead but still need rim tape the only rims in the Mavic range that don't need tape are the 823, I've just ordered a set of wheels on hope hubs with WTB Frequency i-25 as they come out lighter than Mavics offerings and are also lighter than the 521 that I had looked at! I'm also guessing that as the 423 are below the 521 they're probably only pinned as well.
