or have I been unlucky with a set that have lasted less than 4 months?

Are there any that are better?

Cane creek 40 series headset. Odd bit of washing with a hose. Not over-tightened!

Bottom bearing? IME they're all shite. My latest Hope one lasted 2 months from new before disintegrating. Had FSA, CC before and they're all the same. Guessing they just can't handle Scottish winters.

I'm sure someone will be along to say they've had a hope/chris king thats been in the bike since WW2 but in general i'd treat them as consumables and be prepared to replace them every year at the least, or sooner if you ride a lot/in slop.

As above, Chris King somehow just keep going. That's from experience too, I have a new 40 am not convinced the bearings have ever worked

I've had a fair few Cane Creek 40 headsets as original equipment, 4 months sounds about right. Total baff.

aye, given how these ones have fared I shall be keeping spares in the workshop now!

I'm just surprised as the set that came on the bike must have lasted two years before feeling grumbly. most of that was on better conditions but they still got winter riding and the hose treatment.

I'm also now a bit doubtful I had exactly the right bearings in 😕

Cane Creek 40. Changed after 14 months, although probably should have changed at 10. Light cleaning with a hose, the odd spray of wd40. Both top and bottom bearing rusty and gone. Just spend some money on the stainless steel 110 versions. Hopefully they last longer.

Interestingly couldn't see any markings on bearings when I took them out. Definitely got Cane Creek on the new ones though.
