Obviously the only reason I have a singlespeed is to be niche so I would hate to then undo all my good work committing a massive faux pas (sp) ?
If the answer is no then what are the recommending bar widths to give maximum grabbability for wrestling up hills
Failing that I may just get some and resign myself to being 'different' or even worse considered to be German 😳

Answer is definately no. You could go with flat bars or mtfu.

You could put some bullhorn bars on and go fixie, buy some rapha gear and carry a manbag.

Obviously you need H bars or something. 🙄

You might think it's a niche and all about individuality, the truth is you need to fit into one of the STRICT sub-niches or even those people who pretend to like you at the moment will realise no-one else does and will shun you FOREVER.

riding a SS - I guess means you're a bit weird anyway
I don't suppose some bar ends will change much

Bar ends on risers will be de rigueur this coming year, finally breaking out of the underground chic they've had for a few years now.

Wouldn't build a mtb (for mmyself) without them. Others can do what they like.

Right that almost clear then!
Just need an underground type lbs who will sell me some bar ends under the counter
On a more serious note has anyone used the Mary bars- the idea looks interesting.

ebay always has a selection of retro bar ends and they often arrive in brown envelopes ,, shh dont tell anyone but my singlespeed bike may have a set of these,,,
does having bar ends mean you dont need a beard to join in

An emphatic YES! I have a silly-wide carbon riser bar cos you can't get wide flat carbon bars. I am also guilty of HUGE Ergon bar ends that enable me to get my whole hands around.

I don't have a beard ... but I do have curly hair ... and really couldn't care less what I or my bike look like 😉

Yeah, the tart that was riding her just isn't tough enough for one gear! She needed a "rest" 😉

I rode them on mine for a season before it was pointed out to me 🙁
I always thought they looked kinda gay on risers though, after a few weeks buffing it without you'll be fine, just get wide bars

If anybody dares to tell you it is wrong to have bar ends on risers, impale them on said bar ends and have them as a trophy. I have risers, bar ends and a really bad goatie beard and couldn't care what anybody thinks about me. Do your own thing, you don't need permission from anyone.

pete, i have some uber rare ultra light bar end jobbo thingies off the voodoo race bike that'll go lovely with the rest of your ss build.(free to you matey) Alternatively get some salsa pro moto flat bars as they are ****in huge (wider than a lot of risers) and give plenty of grunt on the front end (as used on the green machine) 😀

Seconded on the Salsas: I have them on my Moto Rapido and can't fault them 😀

Barend advantages:
1.hand protection - saved me numerous tree/rock strikes over the years
2.bar protection - need to turn your bike upsidedown? bar ends protect everything on the bars
3.climbing hand position - much better when honking up a hill

Disadvantages:
1.maybe a few grams of weight

Ignore the fashion victim sados - if they work for you then use them.

I'd go with the Marys instead, it's actually quite surprising how much of a difference they make. I feel that I can move from seated to standing in a very fluid motion with them on my SS. They're also very very comfortable once you're used to them.

However, they're pish descending or when the going gets technical.

I gave up with barends about ten years ago when one got caught in some gorse at about twenty mph. I ended up in a ditch with some cracked ribs!

They may be big and funny but they aren't clever. Get h bars if you mist have something. Risers
on their own should be enough for you though.

Has there ever been a post that summed this place up better than this one?

Too much freaking fashion in our sport. I've gone peakless on my helmet (roadie style) and will be fitting some old Onza CWA bar ends on my riser bars soon. Sod the fashionistas who dictate the style, I'm getting too old for that, I just want practicality.

your going niche, and then worried about fitting in?

surely you could start a new niche?

bet its not as niche as me putting bar ends inboard of the brakes and shifters, in a TTstyle, as somewhere to put my hands on long road/fire road slogs.

DEAD comfy, you look like a tool.

"bet its not as niche as me putting bar ends inboard of the brakes and shifters"
Been there, done that ..
[img] [/img]
The big block on the handlebars was an attempt at fitting a camera to my bike. It just filmed everything upside down, otherwise okay
Apologies for the saddle bag though ..
And no, the bottle nozzle didn't get muddy, the mudguard just covered it from spray

EDIT: just noticed this was taken after I'd moved the bar ends back to outside the brake levers/shifters and just inside the grips ..

Marys look more 'normal' (less wierd) than H-bars, especially as H-bars have a pronounced rize to them

In case you didn't know what they looked like:
Titec H-bar

On-one mary:

Else you could try an on-one fleagle:

(I think surly do a similar sweep one (the 1x1?)

On 750mm wide low risers, massive leverage but by christ they make my wrists ache on big rides-just noy enough sweep for the width. If salsa did their 17 degree sweep bars in 700mm+ I'd be chuffed to ****.
Or I might try drops........

you'll just have to laugh at the trendwhores as you hoon past them with their cool oingly boingly gearies up big climbs. Always keeps me amused, alternatively slow down have a chat to them to really mess with their breathing ......and then drop them 😀

It's about having fun, if using a bar ends gives you more climbing oompf and hence more fun, speed and enjoyment then top banana. If some nobend doesn't like the look that's their ****in problem. Just give give them a big kiss to make up for all their insecurities and their need to fit in with the cool gang.

Flat bars with small bar ends.
After all you're going to be spending a lot of riding time out of the saddle, so it makes good sense IMHO, & it seems to help get the power down.
I switch back with hands in-board for more technical corners etc.

On the full sus' geared (seated and no out of the saddle pedaling)I have a riser bar but no bar ends and this combo works very well.

I have to be honest I have found the cockpit set up on my SS so comfortable but allows me to really stomp on the pedals and use my upper body as well and that is with really wide risers (broad shouldered anyway) and some Spesh bar ends (the shaped rubber coated ones). Made me ache all over the first time I went SS'ing.

I always thought bar ends off-road were a bit of a liability (gaps between trees), but I guess it does make sense for getting the power down. And I do absolutely LOVE bar ends on my ss roadbike... hmmm, maybe I'll give it a go when I'm back riding again.

As a slight aside, Cinnamon Girl - how wide are your bars? I seem to ride wider bars than most girls (I HATE narrow ones), so am just curious... also what are they - just in case they're wider than mine and I go carbon on my ss one day.

Cheers!
