I'm quite happily very out of date and still running an old XT Octalink chainset. I've picked up a set of hardly used (but not much younger) LX Hollowtech II cranks that I want to try; I'm going to need an HTII bottom bracket.

The cranks are FC-M583 3x9s (the M designating Mountain, so they must pre-date SLX).

Are all of Shimano's mountain HTII bottom brackets interchangeable? CRC have a Deore BB52 until for under £9 and a XT MT800 for less than £15 although I believe that the cup size has shrunk somewhat so I'd need an adapter to fit it; would the XT be worth the extra?

I'm hoping that the crank spindle size has remained the same so that these BBs will work.

Either of those will work. Needs to be a mtb one and not a road one.

As you've worked out, the tool can now differ but i've seen that come in the box with the new BB before. All have been the same and standard 24mm diameter though.

In my experience the smaller tool is included in the box with the XT.
