I’ve damaged the thread on my current one so stole one from a new cassette.

An Xt 12s lock ring is about £15 but there are much cheaper options (11s stuff). Are they all interchangeable?

Some of the cheaper ones are steel rather than aluminium, which might not be a bad thing for you.

  • The small 10t as opposed to 11t cog might be a clearance issue trying to use an 11speed lockring on a 12speed cassette. Personally I routinely replace aluminium lockrings with steel ones.

Ah, yes 12s XT... an HG lockring won't work (that rules out 12 speed road as well as 11 speed mtb).

I have a freshly removed M8100 12s cassette - it's worn but I'm not sure I ever used the top gear. I can send you the 10t sprocket/locking if you'd like.

There are even two HG standards, one of which works on all cassettes and another that will only do 12 up cassettes... (think there might even be an antique 13 up standard somewhere).

I always do the opposite.

In past group sets the weight difference between LX/SLX and XT was pretty much all in the lockring! I think XT had  larger spider as well, but that didn't actually make much difference to the weight just stopped a few more of the middle cogs from digging into the cassette.

with 12S it's the number of alu cogs isn't it?   Deore all steel, SLX 1 aluminium, XT 2 aluminium.

Probably, I'm thinking back to 10s.  The point being that I've never had any issues with alu lockrings and it's an easy few grammes to save off the back of the bike.
