Can you use the adaptor from any manufacturer with a brake caliper from any manufacturer?
Specifically I have a set of adaptors from Avid that with avid brakes you use the conical washers. If I change over to maguras should I fit them to the adator with or without the washers?

without - the avid washers are part of the caliper for sizing purposes.
but no, they're not necessarily the same - the overall sizes *should be* the same, but sometimes you can get subtle differences in shape which means that things will foul and not fit together.
