Looking at getting my uncle in Toronto to buy and post me a Santa Cruz frame as it will be £930 plus post as oppose to £1400 here.

If he marks it up as a gift will it be exempt from taxes, i'll be insuring it for the full amount if that matters.

thanks

I would imagine that the ladies and gents of the Revenue are not as stupid as you think they are.

No he will have to put a value on it and if over £38 you will be liable for vat plus a handling fee from the carrier at the least .

Then that's what you'll pay duty on.
Marked gift doesn't make any difference. They still want what's owing on it.

Get the uncle to put a few scratches and tatty stickers on it then add some grease and dirt and hey presto its a tax free (I think) secondhand frame 🙂

I sometimes buy stuff from the States second hand and you'll still be liable for duty. Whats really annoying is if they do stop it you'll get a letter telling you what to pay which will include further postal charges even though you will have paid for delivery to your door when you ordered the stuff (if that makes sense...)

There is no exemption from VAT and duty for s/h goods - you'll pay tax on whatever it's valued at just as if it was new (except that the value will presumably be less).

As to having to pay a postal charge, you've already paid for delivery, but you haven't paid for the extra handling involved in getting it through customs.

No. I had paid for delivery to my door via UPS, they added a ParcelForce charge for delivery to my door.....
In my view that's F all to do with getting it though customs

Are you sure? How much was the charge and how was it listed on your bill? I've certainly never been charged anything for delivery on something I've imported (which includes a bike frame from the US, and stuff both sent by UPS and delivered by PF), but I normally expect to get hit with a charge for customs clearance in addition to the tax.

Then again, are you totally sure of your facts - it was UPS, not USPS who it was originally sent with (the former have their own distribution in the UK, the latter would be delivered to your door by PF)?

Cant argue with what your saying TBH as too long ago to have details of charges etc however i ordered parts from the same person twice.
The first time i was hit with tax/duty and the parcelForce charge, the second time i asked him to put the lowest insurance amount on the label he could and i didn't get hit by customs and it was delivered without any further charge.
I have just ordered some more stuff from the same person, i'll update this thread with what happens

If you want to get insurance and get it through customs get them to mark it with the full price for insurance purposes but as a warranty replacement.
It won't get charged then

I've been charged for warranty replacements.

They've refunded me no problem when I've sent them a copy of the original invoice or the tracking details sending the item back to the supplier though.

The long and short of it these days is it's not that easy to get away without paying.

USPS/PF seem the worst.

You might get lucky though.

Which is of course fraudulent/illegal.

Can anybody give me any tips on evading income tax, or maybe on fraudulently claiming benefits?

I wonder why you had to go through that rigmarole? 🙄
