I used to like the 2.3 x 27.5” aggressor my bike came with. Exo flavour and 3c - for use on the back wheel.
However, it was always a bit ‘drifty’ and I’d say I do less trail centre riding now (still quite a bit - but do more of the messing about in the woods on more natural trails) and maybe that’s the difference.
Braking in the dry is ok - but I’m finding getting drive up technical climbs is particularly bad. I’ve been using a Forekaster on my hardtail and then a mixture of slaughter / dissector on the back of the full suss over the spring / summer.
Maybe both of those tyres are just significantly better (whilst also still rolling pretty well)?
Aggressor has the braking grip of a minion SS with the rolling speed of a DHR. It's a pointless tyre.
I've got a 2.5 that I quite like- definitely faster than a dhr2, definitely grippier than a semislick. But you definitely give up more grip than you gain in speed, that's for sure. I don't think it's as good a tyre as a dhr2 or a rockrazor but to be fair to it, I've not found anything else that sits between them that's better. Except maybe a well worn dhr2!
This last little spell when things have been super dry and crumbly here I've gone off it quite a bit, I used to be happier with it but it doesn't like that sort of looseness much at all.
2.5 is much better than the 2.3 version.
Still a narrow window of use though. I’ve found it great in rocky stuff and the land rover estate tracks we have in this part of Scotland. Also good in the dry on the Aboyne enduro trails but starts to lose braking grip when it gets wet and steep. Rolls really nicely though.
One on the back at the moment, but with Tweedlove at the weekend and the recent rain, I think it will be coming off. Only got a part worn HR2 to go back on though and not really a fan of those in the wet either.
I’ve not tried the 2.5” but heard it’s quite a bit burlier than the 2.3 version with much bigger knobs. So then maybe it grips quite a bit more but loses any speed advantage over the 2.3 DHR? I’ve also got a 2.4” dhr which I fit for the sloppiest part of the winter as that thing has epic grip. Just pretty draggy.
The warranty replacement dissector (for one which went wonky after about 5 rides) is now back on - will see how it compares having ridden the Forekaster on the hardtail out last time and the FS with the aggressor the time before. Hoping it’ll find enough grip to delay the need for the slower dhr2 for a good few months yet.
I've got a 2.5 on the back. Only 1 big ride in, not noticed any quirks though.
I think I'd describe it as 'non-descript' which I suppose a Jack of all trades tyre is likely to be.
I was torn a bit between it and a Dissector, but that was silly money at the time.
My sense is that it's best for gritty natural and artificial trails, which is why I thought it would be a good fit on my fullsus.
I'm running both the 2.3 an 2.5 on different bikes. It was an summer ideal tyre when I had one bike, good for dry hardpack conditions, whilst not being terrible for longer XC rides. It also came stock on my enduro bike but as noted above it looses traction on anything steep and/or wet, therefore it was an odd choice. I like them still for hardpacked trails, swinley forest etc, but it's too much of a compromise in other areas to keep them on year round.
I run a 2.5 on the rear of my Rocket for the summer and find it a good balance between grip and speed for winch and plummet riding and bike parks. A DHRII replaces it for the winter though as it sucks in any kind of mud! Had the 2.3 on another bike for a while and liked that too. I have found that you have to run the Aggressor a bit harder, about 2-3 psi, than other tyres to get it to work well though.
I usually run one on the rear over drought periods, but as others have said it's really only suitable for hardpack and trail centres. As soon as the rains return I'm back to a DHR II.
Just think it's a bit rubbish when it's really dry and it becomes sandy. Fine on hardpack but nothing else
I think what made me think it was bad was a technical ish climb - not wildly steep but rooty / rocky and with some step sort of bits.
I’m not a hugely decent climber but I’m sure I’ve ridden up it better on the hardtail with the Forekaster (2.6” exo) and the FS with the Slaughter (2.6” grid) than I did with the aggressor. I kept finding it spinning out on stuff (all dry - not even a hint of moisture) as you were putting power in. Either that or I was just having a crap day in terms of climbing which is a definite possibility 🤷♂️
I ran one a 2.5 my RipMo for a year or so (because that's what Ibis ships with). The description 'between a DHRII and a Minion SS' is a good one.
While I've mostly switched to Magic Mary/Hans Damf combos in 2.6 flavour on the RipMo, I do run a 2.4 dissector (paired with a DHRII) as a rear on my Revel. I think it's a better tyre all round, bit grippier, doesn't seem any slower, better in slop. I do run a RIMPACT tho as - like many maxis tyres - the EXO casing is a bit fragile.
I don't mind the aggressor in the summer in a 2.3. But mostly I run a bonty SE5 2.3 on the back as it offers a little bit more bite in conditions other than dry. But once it's wet I will swap back to wild enduros.

tread pattern isnt really going to be the decider here I wouldn't have thought.
rubber compound, and pressure should be much more important.
Agressors I find come in dual compound (eg not the sticky 3C that you will almost always get minions in unless you really try not to) as its made specifically as a rear trail type tyre. I'm happy with mine, and if I was forced to pick a tyre combo for life, minion/agressor would be it.
My aggressor is an exo / 3c compound - vs the dissector which is also an exo / 3c compound. The slaughter is just ‘gripton’ (whatever that means) and the Forekaster is dual compound.
I’ve been really quite impressed with the Forekaster considering it’s light in a 2.6” exo casing and just seems to hook up in all sorts of conditions. There is an rimpact insert in there as it seemed a bit too light - especially on a hardtail where I bash it into rocks a bit sometimes.
Hopefully it's a bit drifty in mud, I've just put a 2.5DD WT on for winter! 🙂

My aggressor is an exo / 3c compound
Maxxis don't list the Aggressor in 3c anywhere, it's dual compound only. Is yours an OEM special?
Rekon is probably the tyre that the aggressor needed to be - i.e a WT compatiable slightly better grip Minion SS.
im running a 2.5 3c DD aggressor on the back. No issues for me at all. Been faultless riding both Ard rock and Wharncliffe in a variety of conditions.

It came OEM on a Bird - but it has yellow logos not white like a lot of OEM Maxxis tyres.
You’ve made me doubt it’s a 3c / Exo now - I’ll have to go out to the garage and check it later!
