After reading about luscious new nicolai frames I idly looked on eBay. This one went for £280.
It's not a great ad but still seems cheap. Can anyone identify the likely age of the frame and tell me what rrp was to see if it really was "too cheap"
Url button crashes safari on my iPhone every time.
£280? Not worthless, you can buy a lot of chocolate biscuits for that 🙂
Worth less, not worthless.
not a great advert and if that's a 1 1/8" headtube it would reduce the price too, for me.
Bugger. Might not get much for my 6 pack Fox 36 van combo with avalanche suspension both ends when I come to sell it.
From the shock, probably a 2008(ish) so could be a 7yo frame... from the frame if it's not the original shock, could be as old as 02-ish (if not older) so could be over 13 yo.... so maybe not that cheap?
I'm not convinced the market for older parts is as bad as some people make out. Recently stripped and sold two 26" bikes, worried stuff was going to sell for peanuts but it's all gone fairly well. Heckler frame went for over £400 (26" and antique 1 1/8" headtube), 26" Hope/Mavic wheelset went for what I paid 2nd hand when I bought them a few years ago. Even the forks didn't do too bad.
A good listing with lots of good pictures seems to make a big difference on how well things go on eBay.
As above, £280 seems ok. I'd pay a lot more than than for a Bandit frame.
Worth less, not worthless.
This probably. I'd still be interested in some of the higher end AM/Enduro frames, but I suspect stuff from the mid and low ranges is going to be very cheap as the number of buyers will shrink and they'll be fussy and buy up the good stuff.
I watched a set of Rockshox Dual air 26" old style 454 pikes go for over £180 on eBay recently! That's a very decent price. Maybe the buyer thought they were the newer version? Who knows, I would have been very happy with that as a seller.
Stuff like wheels seem to sell for ok money too. I think complete bikes are whats suffering the most. My friend is trying to sell his full build and having no luck.
Look for similar aged 29" frames and see what they go for (if they existed at that time)
People who have to have the latest thing like to kid themselves that 26 stuff is worthless to make them feel extra value from spending the money to move to 29, 27.5, 28.13 whatever.
In reality the 26 market is still there and I haven't noticed anything going for nothing (not the good stuff anyway) but wish it would...
It's hard to tell the age of that Nicolai and therefore knowing nothing of geometry and parts compatibility even as a keen MTBer it is too much of a risk to bid proper money on. I've actually been surprised at the numbers 26" FS frames have been making with pretty old kit making good money.
And longer travel, straight steerer 26" forks are doing really well.
Good 26" stuff is getting more expensive, because it's not been made anymore, but is still a good choice for smaller riders / kids. I can't get the bargains I could a couple of years ago, on the plus side I've been selling used forks for 50% more than I paid.
As above, I think used, mint condition 26 inch kit is going up in castle. Same applies to 9 speed.
going up in castle
Genuine - WTF (does that mean)??
Nevertheless... 26" stuff should be going UP in value, well it probably will do eventually.
I know now that there will never be another nimble, light, whippy, responsive trail hardtail made ever again, ever. For this you need 26" wheels, a supple carbon frame and XC-inspired geometry.
I'm hanging on to my Ibis Tranny. There won't be anything made to top it, until maybe when 26" is rediscovered as the new niche - in 2025.
Genuine - WTF (does that mean)??
It's windows crap-phone interpretation of the word 'value'.
