Can't say I've ever used it for plotting an urban cycling route, but interesting read...

Must confess I pretty much only use Google Maps and OSMaps.

I'd forgotten how terrible Apple Maps was when it launched. I've never really used it since and default to Google Maps or Waze when I'm driving.

It'll be interesting to see how good it is now to compare.

Despite being a long term Apple fanboy I concur. Maybe I need to take another look.

Maybe its good if you live in NY. In Kent it won't even try to give me cycling directions, just says they aren't available. Google maps isn't great but at least makes a decent attempt at routing via cycle paths and quiet roads.

Never used Apple Maps for cycling but it's my default for car Sat Nav now - I always used Waze but it now seems to take great pleasure in sending you down to most convoluted and unsuitable routes!

Apple maps and CarPlay are atrocious.

We can do a thing where the phone shows one route and the dashboard takes us not only a different route, but to a different destination! We have worked out that if the passenger puts something into Apple Maps using the phone handset it causes the issue.
If we use the dashboard screen to create the destination and route, then the two routes match (usually!).
We also worked out that Apple Maps is just poor for routing anyway.

Apple Maps is basically banned in our house now...

Just tried to plot a route from my home in South Manchester to the centre of the city and it tells me that cycling directions are not available, so...I'll continue to use Komoot I guess?

Massive Apple fan but yeah the Maps app just seems to be terrible vs. Google Maps whenever I try to use it. Actually tried to use it abroad on holiday recently only to be informed that cycling directions where not available in that country 😂 So pretty useless.

Of course the downside to using Google maps on your phone is they know (and keep a record of) everywhere you've ever been, shop you've ever visited, who you were with at the time, etc, etc, if that kind of thing bothers you 🤷‍♂️

If I'm being totally honest, I've been using Apple maps thinking it was Google Maps, so there's that...

But, it's got me everywhere I've wanted to go to so far...

Just tried to use it in my PC browser, they don't seem to have a non Apple device interface!

when i've plotted city names for cycling on apple maps, it usually comes back with no route found..

i've tried west yorkshire to blackpool / liverpool etc. useless

i do use apple maps in the car. works fine, and live traffic data tends to be good, see red on the screen and it is usually correct in that slow traffic ahead.

Apple Maps is great for cycling, but only if you’re in one of the few areas where they’ve added cycle routes.
