Both my Magicshine batteries are toast, possibly the charger or both. So rather than faff around fixing them, would buying another set be the best value for lumen per £

I tried the P7 torch route but those eventually failed too.

Looking for something with a reliable 3 hour run time.

The 'improved' plastic cased with LED read out magicshine battery is available on ebay for around £30 (mine's been very good & is 9 months old and showing no signs of any issues).

A new battery from Smudge will cost around £50 (you need to email and confirm, I'm guessing from quote for other batteries) though will have a warrenty back to him.

The question is, that though you compaining about the MS units for the £50 (I guess) you initally spent, have they done the job for a year?
I spent £450 on a main brand light, they only lasted me 2 years (though had warrenty issues within that) before I had to give em up as a bad job. This experience was repeated amoungstall my night biking m8, who spent money on expensive lights pre the cheap P7 torches.

I still say that £50 was well spent..swings and round-abouts after all(& you could flog the head unit for at least a £10, if not more), though I don't begrudge anyone who feels that get better value from the main manufacturers.

EBay search for 1200 lumen. I got one from Hong Kong for 38 posted, took two weeks and first impressions are very good. CNC metal case, waterproof light and battery. 3 hour runtime on full brightness, has 3 modes 1200 lumen, 300 lumen. and 1200 flash/strobe. Comes with battery and charger. Need to get travel adapter, but 1.55 on amazon. Tried light through Ashton court and blaise castle, so bright and wide beam, can be bar mounted or helmet mounted (2nd option better). Hope this helps.

The MagicShine lights were great value for money. I think I had about eighteen months use out of them night riding twice a week, so that is probably a lot to ask of a £50 light.

I think I will just try another set.

I might take one of these along as a back up.

I've just received one of those 1200 jobbies from DX. It came in a box marked 900 lumens. Currently going back & forth with them whilst they try to decide what they've actually sent me. 🙁

Tempted by these...
?1600 Lm for £35: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280752346088
2200 Lm for £110: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220870253168.
Both from UK

i have the 1200 lumen one off the ebay link, although i got it direct from deal extreme.
i note that raleigh are selling the same light for £159.
my first impressions were, the light looks well made, good quality all aluminium construction, the battery bag looks a bit cheap, but then the light is cheap, (£32).
battery looks well sealed, apparently this is an improvement on earlier batteries.
light beam is good, really bright, decent spread etc.
HOWEVER,
the first time i plugged the charger in, it melted.
now, i mentioned this on amother thread on here and a forum member helped me out with a charger (cheers smudge!)
my honest opinion now?
spend the bit extra and buy from a seller that other people will recommend.

Ok so I ordered two of the ebay 1200 lumen lights and one of the torches for a back up. I'd imagine delivery will take a couple of weeks?

What martymac said:

Arrived last week. Quality seems good and I'm sure the back up and service will be a lot less hassle - if I ever need it that is.
I'll be testing the unit out next week and comparing it to my D.I.Y. 900 special from Mr Trout.

Lightman - Thanks.
Looking at that it is an XML.
DX have been pretty responsive really & have been sent pics of the LED. They say they're asking the supplier what's happened...

What colour is the light they throw out?

I've got a fenix torch for the helmet and a 4sevens for the bars

The 4sevens is a much more yellow light, and its a lot better to use

The fenix is really white and I have a lot of trouble picking out any detail with it. It seems to kill any sense of contours and undulations

Get some ay-ups, battery lasts forever and so do the lights.
