Hi 3d printerists of STW,

I'm after a downtube shifter boss cover for a bike I'm putting together and rather than spend £20 on the Probem Solvers ones I've found the print files for one on Thingiverse.

Now I don't know the first thing about 3d printing but if anyone out there thinks they would be able to print one of these and send it to me then I will happily send you some beer money for your troubles.

Thingiverse file

Thanks!

I think it's illegal to make coins.

Hiya.

Have you checked the dimensions to make sure the part fits? There is a lot of good stuff on Thingiverse & equally a lot of crap.
If the guy who designed them has actually used them, then i suppose it has a decent chance of working OK (or working with a minimum of fettling).

Did you have a particular colour in mind? I currently have white, black, silver, royal blue, fluo green, red & translucent purple.

How many do you want? Most of the 'cost' (for me anyway) comes in the set-up time.
I'll do you a couple of them for £10 +postage. Looking at them in the slicer software, they are Ø20.7mm. A large letter (<£1 to post)can be up to 25mm so this will be right on the cusp depending if I send with a jiffy bag or just in an envelope. A small parcel will be more like £3.00.

Drop me a PM if you are interested & we can go from there.

Does it have to be 3D printed?

It's the sort of thing you could easily fashion my hand/dremel from an old chunk of Nylon/Delrin or "Sculpt" with some Sugru?

Don't you need some like this to terminate the cable outers from the STI's??

I'll do it for nothing, doesn't look a complicated part at all to print and hardly expensive to post. Can offer white, translucent, concrete, blue, or orange.

No warranty though!

I'll do it, and give you £15, and hand deliver them. Always wanted an excuse to buy a 3D printer...

😉

It looks like someone else has successfully printed some and the downtube diameter is as close as it can be to what I have so I'm confident that it will work well enough!

I'll have one of those on one side but not on the other, as I will be a 1x set up, so I only need one of the boss covers.

Huge thanks for all of your offers of help, really appreciate it. I'll send some PMs now and if it works out I'll post a picture up of the finished bike.

Just hacksaw off as much as possible, then file the rest down, it's dead easy as the braze holding it on makes a dead easy guide as to what's frame and what's shifter mount so you just keep going till all that's left is a golden circle.

Alternatively, just get someone with a welding torch to pull it off. Just needs warming up until the bronze melts and you just pull it off and tidy up the tube with a file/emery cloth.

That was going to be my second suggestion after the bolt on cable stops.

Slight hijack but has anyone 3d printed a dummy headset bearing but with 16mm hole instead of 30 or 40mm ID to use as centering guides when pressing headset cups with big washer threaded rod type presses.
Could be a nice little earner.

I'd like to have the option to use them in the future, so I'd rather keep them on for now.

I keep meaning to try this to see how durable the plastic is for this application. I think that for the 'home mechanic' it would be fine, but no good for workshops.
I have a list of 'things to try' but other priorities always get in the way.
