How do those colour shift/flip paint jobs work?

Do you buy one paint that has the colours in or is it a spray technique that allows you to choose the two colours?

I'm planning a ti gravel bike build and thinking I'd like it to be a homage to my old team Marin which was grey zolatone frame with neon magenta bars/stem/forks. Could you do a neon magenta that flips to something else?

Richard is the expert here but I think he put a black base coat down then used a colour shift Pearl mixed within a clear top coat. The colour shift pigment was pre-mixed so colours defined. I’m sure there must be custom pigment stockists who can mix a desired colour combo maybe?

Cjr61 is right. It’s some sort of magical wizardry type of pigment that goes over a different ground coat. The flips are just the pigments. But there is plenty to choose from that flip from and to different colours. Can get two or three colour flips I think.

https://perfectpearlsandpigments.co.uk/ Have a good selection of flips and paints etc

Thanks for the link. There are some lovely colours in there. I'm sure I'll end up in analysis paralysis.

I'm interested in the process of doing this as I've got a couple of bikes I want to experiment with. I've got the space to do it and a 50 litre compressor but nothing else yet.

What kind of paint so you use? Is there any issues with using it at home, like health hazards etc? Do you finish them with a clear lacquer? Any recommendations for suppliers?

Can I just buy a gun from Machine Mart and crack on?

How much sanding is involved? Do you use any power tools?

For my DJ bike I was thinking of a messy, multi coloured, rattle can job using vinyl masking for sharp logos. But then I'd want a slick, glossy finish so it looks pro rather than poo.

Sharkattack I use two pack clearcoat which is isocyanate based so it’s not very good stuff to be breathing in. Also use etch primer. Solvent base coat and different primers. I wouldn’t recommend breathing any of it in !

There is LOTS of sanding involved. A small mini spray gun should run of a 50 litre compressor

I've not been here for a few weeks so not seen the results of Richard's handiwork, notwithstanding the fact that he has a frame of mine! Amd super busy too, great to see. These are absolutely stunning! Some fabulous looking frames there! I can also attest that Richard is a top bloke and super patient when it comes to dealing with indecisive boggers like me, even sorting out custom decals and filling in a dent on the fork for me. Top man.

These are spot on. What kind of turn around time and costs are we talking about for a carbon frameset? I have a tt bike id love to get done prior to April, been mulling it over for a while now and cervelo looks mint.

Feel free to pm me bigyim

Thanks everyone for the support. Cervelo was dropped off last night have have a few currently on the go. Going to speak to some one today about media blasting or paint stripping service to speed up the turn around and save me some elbow grease.

Costs massively vary but I think I’m pretty cheap as it’s more of a hobby than a business. But that also means turnaround time might be a bit longer as I also have a full time job etc.

I'd be pretty keen to get some more details - I've always wanted a custom painted frame but never quite had the balls to do it nor the money to pay someone like Fat. Do you have an email address for contact?

I hope the image embed works, otherwise see this:

It's fantastic. The paintwork is immense and Richard is a super super nice guy. We changed the design a few times during the process with it being a series of chats about what may or may not work. He's patient and a total artist.

I recieved my bike back from Richard before Christmas but only just got round to building it back up. Yet to fit chain and cables and gawd knows when I'll get the time for that but anyway, I'm gonna try amd link these pics for yous.

The bike was a five quid tip find, 1990 Kona Fire Mountain. Shabby frame, seized seatpost, shonky wheels and working drive train including original biopace chainrings and rear u-brake. A trip up the road to The Seatpost Man got that sorted (for free as I was his 1500th consecutive successful seatpost removal!), other stuff, wheels, front brake, finishing kit all off Ebay. Ignore the ATAC decals on the stem, its actually a Control Tech but I was having trouble finding decals to match up with everything.

Hope this works.... https://photos.app.goo.gl/5CGCGJLapU2mbLj87

And for what it's worth Richard was a star, kept me up to date with everything and was really patient with me as I frankly wasnt sure of what I wanted.
