I've got some old 591 racks, but they do rub on the frame a little. I like the idea behind the inno or yakima racks the hold the tyre, so no risk of rubbing frames.
Any experiences, good or bad?
Bit of chamois leather round the frame where it rubs works with my 591s
Or two layers of Heli-tape on the frame at the contact point lasts a good year for me. A small compromise for the best roof mounted bike rack. You're in danger of discounting the best rack for a pretty insignificant issue. Not that you probably find this an issue I personally think they look pretty crap when there are no bikes fitted - the 591's fold up quite small and close to the roof, the wheel mounted ones i've see have huge ugly plastic structures sticking up from the roof - and at the end of the day the rack spends more of their time on your roof without bikes fitted.
As above but I use old inner tube where the clamp goes on frame. Travelled all round Europe with two bikes on the roof and not a mark.
I do also run the bikes with the forks towards rear of car and shove a few old socks over the stanchions. Sods law says one day a tiny stone will hit them at 80 mph. That cannot be good.
Problem solved by an inner tube / heli tape. Thanks. 🙂
