Unfortunately I hit a car at 30mph after the car had pulled out on me last week. 80 year old driver just didn’t see me, broke kit and flashing daylights didn’t help. I broke his windscreen and ended up on his bonnet for 20 mins unable to move, taken to hospital with suspected cracked ribs and a broken leg, luckily just soft tissue damage and bruising. I am a British cycling member, I have started the process of getting legal help through them. Just wondering as anyone had an success with the process, is it worth the time and effort. Anything else I should be doing. Cheers
A friend has used them and been quite happy. The process may not be quick, but it works. Keep track of all your costs, down to the last packet of paracetamol.
(Currently got an injury claim being handled by Cycling UK solicitors that got stalled for 6 months due to Covid knocking all medical examinations on the head.)
Yes I'm using their solicitors Leigh Day at the moment after an uninsured motorist broke my spine. They're very good, though the process is taking forever, I imagine it'll be 4-5 years before i receive any compensation.
Main thing is to write everything up on a spreadsheet from damaged kit to prescription charges to time friends and family spend caring for you. Everything.
Hope you mend well.
@wait4me I’m in a very similar situation except approaching the 3 1/2 year mark for my case. Expecting court next year. It is not a quick process but the solicitor at Leigh day has been very thorough.
Another one here who had to call on the services of Leigh Day. Took nearly 2 years to get it all sorted but was great at getting everything sorted. The original round of physio didn't fix my back properly so they arranged for a second round with a different physio and I was much better, without them pushing for it and further medical examinations I'd still be having trouble with my back now!
I've used them. Relatively minor injuries compared to some of those above which probably meant the payout was pretty quick because I was 'fixed'. I got the money for bike and kit very quickly. Injury money was later once I'd finished physio (paid for by the driver's insurance), had a medical assessment and was happy that I was fully healed.
It is worth doing. Make sure you keep records of any extra costs you incur (taxis, hospital parking etc) and keep notes off what hurts when and anything you're not able to do because of the injuries. Don't accept a final payout until you're sure you're fully healed.
Bugger, I’m sorry but this

Can’t just be ignored.. you alright dude? I’m hoping your spinal cord was not damaged? Best of healing vibes to you & the others (including the OP) on the thread still hurt
@z1ppy, I'm doing good thanks. Was very lucky though it didn't feel much like it for a while. Thankfully spinal cord was ok. 6 fused vertebrae now so not ideal, but life by and large back to normal 2.5 years later. Back on the bike and should hit 4000 miles this year, albeit rather slow miles. Gets me out of doing the gardening so every cloud!
Anyone reading this who doesn't have BC membership I really urge them to consider it simply for the massive help their legal cover has been during all of this.
I'm a British Cycling member and I've been very fortunate and I've never had to make a claim.
However it's great to hear that the system works and that you can/do get sorted.
I'm sad to hear about all of your injuries and I hope you all heal quickly :o)
I've used them, BC and Leigh Day. It was a bit more complicated than it could have been as I was competing in a time trial at the time. I was pleasantly suprised with their work, since then I've always made sure I have British Cycling cover since if riding on the road regularly.
I used them a couple of years ago after I got knocked off, it was fairly quick and easy. The only downside is I've been getting nuisance calls ever since, somebody along the line sold my data.
Same here. Guy pulled out on me, over the bonnet etc.
BC and Leigh Day were excellent. All claims handled well and a settlement was fair.
Get a bike shop to do all the bike and kit damage assessment, and it should all be okay.
Get well.
