My edge 305's suffering from the unique to older garmins "shake to switch off" feature, which makes it about as much use as a chocolate brake disk off road.
So £160 for a Rider 50 or £65 to get the edge refurbed.
How good are the maps on the Bryton, are there any maps with bridleways or even more detail shown on them or are the maps suitable for road use only?
I got the Bryton Rider 35 about a year ago to replace my 205 with a cracked screen.
I'd just done the surprisingly easy repair to cure the shake/off problem on the 205. You just have to solder a couple of fine wires from the battery to the circuit board. The problem is caused by a dodgy connector between them. http://blog.mtbguru.com/2008/11/06/surgery-on-the-garmin-edge-305/
I find the BrytonBridge interface software really awkward to use, and wish I'd gone for another Garmin. The gadget itself is OK, but there's been a lot of firmware upgrades to it.
Friends seem to use Endomondo, or Strava, or some of the other many phone apps.
One guy uses a £25 maplin gps tracker to record tracks, but it also bluetooths to his phone so that the phone battery isn't drained by powering the gps receiver.
Sorry for the long reply, hope it helps.
