Defined at Nuremberg as being the 'Supreme International Crime' a war of aggression is clearly not something to be taken lightly.
Chilcot has stated "We have concluded that the UK chose to join the invasion of Iraq before peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted. Military action at the time was not the last resort".
This being the case (and its as close to a discussion of the legality of the war that Chilcot was allowed to get....because he was specifically not allowed to investigate the issue) then surely Mr Blair has a case to answer in a court of law.
As for Blair's prime time apology, his wretched self pity and "depth of sorrow that you will never know" line, probably does not equate to that of an orphan, widow, paraplegic suffering as a consequence of his and Bush's actions. I'd believe him if he had buried his sons/wife/family....but he has not, so he should just shut the F#uk up and stop playing the victim whilst on the other hand, telling the world he would do it all again because he is a brave leader!
Can't help but think that its time for him to 'pay the piper'. I hope that the various victims sue him into oblivion. If there is crowd funding required I'm in for £20 without blinking. Anyone game?
Will it include all the people that were pro Iraq war on here at the time ?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing
Is there a legal requirement to exhaust all other avenues before declaring war? Moreover who decides on what constitutes a viable alternative?
The Goverment of the day had the legal right to declare war, but for the first time in our history they put it to a non-binding parliamentary vote which passed - so by majority the commons voted to take us to war.
It might have been a messy, unnecessary war which lead to the deaths of thousands of people it was meant to help and lead to a massive increase in support for terrorism, but Tony Blair didn't get up one morning and just phone up the MOD and shout "waaaaaaaaar" down the phone.
Wot no petition?
Good way of giving money to lawyers, then. Cherie might want a piece of that action after his antics with Rupert's missus.
waaaaaaaaar
Good God y'all!
Not me. Let me preface this by saying I have no love for Tony Blair and I didn't want us to go to war. That said, a decision was made and it was made with parliamentary backing. It's taken Chilcot 7(?) years to tell us the decision could have been made better in a 12-volume report with 12 million words and a 150 page (!) executive summary. Instead of focusing on the finger-pointing and flaming, let's focus on what we learnt and what we can do better next time, which was surely the point of all this time and expense.
I heard Blair interviewed/harangued by John Humphries on the Today Programme yesterday morning and neither interviewer nor interviewee came out of it looking good.
Tired of all this negative politics.
Can we not just all chip in for a one way ticket to Aleppo where he can observe first hand, and discuss with the friendly locals, the long term consequences of his actions?
Two points, ah, two flats, and a packet of gravel.
I went on the march against the Iraq war before it happened, TBH being proven 'right' isn't that much of a consolation...
The chillcot conclusions probably don't tell bereaved soldiers family's or the victims in Iraq much that they don't already know...
So convicting Blair, What does it achieve?
The starry eyed dreamer of dreams, the man who gave us "conviction politics" and champagne socialism, everyone's least favourite "peace envoy"? He's a walking contradiction and probably a bigger outcast than at any point since leaving office, but is he the only one to blame?
What do those directly affected want? That's probably the important thing to consider, do they simply blame Blair? How about Bush? The 'intelligence' community? Senior military personnel?
It's not a simple question...
But what do you when "you believe fervently" someone has conviction politics of mass destruction?
I'd rather see the money used to rebuild lives destroyed by it all.
I'd rather this was in the other forum
