I seems to remember there being a few 69ers kicking around a few years ago, and that made me wonder if anyone has tried to make a few bob by bringing out a 650b9er. (doesn't quite have the same ring to it.)

It won't be much different to a 69er, will it? I still ride one (Singular Hummingbird) and I reckons that it's the dog's bollocks.

In fact, much as I'm tempted by a Stooge, I suspect that if I didn't have it I'd really miss it...

I still can't work out why 69ers died out. When I see the efforts manufacturers have to go to to get a 29er with short stays, a front mech and appropriate gearing I can't help wondering why they don't just stick a smaller wheel on the back. Is it just that they looked funny (i.e. different)?

Probably, although I think that they look fine. I've owned a few different ones though, so they look "normal" to me.
In the flesh, rather than in a photo, most people don't seem to notice, especially now that 29" wheels are far more common than they used to be.

The review of the Liteville 601 on pinkbike (designed to be run with larger front / smaller rear in most sizes) suggests that the smaller wheel takes a tighter arc around a corner with the same lean angle and claims that's beneficial in terms of maneouvrability. But that suggests to me that the rear is less likely to drift on the limit so the front is more likely to drift - and that bothers me!

Was that the problem with 69ers?

I think that the only real (marketing) problems were that they were perceived as weird looking and people got hung up (pun intended) about the front wheel rolling over stuff and the rear getting, yes, hung up.
I can't say I've ever noticed that happening though.

as soon as B+ tyres become available I'll be trying 29+/B+ on Dually/Blunt35

Will be bunging a b+ wheel on the back of the Stooge at some point. 29+ front /29 works great so will be interesting to try.

I have tried 26 rear/27.5 front on my Liteville 301 and 27.5 rear and 29 front. I'm currently using 26 rear and 29 front and think it's amazing. The back wheel lets go before the front due to it's smaller size. See how Tobi uses it on really tight steep stuff. If you are North West you can try mine.

This. +1.

I see WTB have brought out a 45mm rim now, so will probably look at that closely.

What I'd really like to do is get the back end of my Niner modified to run 29+ but a b+ could be easier.

I curiously run the same setup as Michaelcycle on my Liteville 301: 650b front and 26" rear. Run a Magic Mary on the front + a Crossmax rear as I like the back to let go on the steep shit.
