Working up in Stornoway next week - heading up a day early so would like to take the CX bike and do some exploring.
I've got a hold baggage allowance on the plane and have a bag I can put the bike in with the wheels off.
However I've heard to plane is made of an old 2CV held together with rubber bands?
Alternatively, any places to hire decent bikes in Stornoway? Had a look but all the bikes I can see for rent are pretty crappy - not ones I'd be doing 60+ miles in a day on
When I flew up a couple of years ago the plan was too small to take a surfboard and someone else said they weren't allowed to take a bike
However I'd just call and ask, also sometime things which aren't officially allowed get squeezed on if you just turn up. Risky though!
There were some fun looking mtb trails built round the castle too.
Whats the plane?
Call to the airline as some models the door isn't big enough for the bike bag.
The last 2 tiny ones would have taken bikes though and one of them didn't have a cabin door to the pilot
It's a Saab 340 now on that route. Has a cargo hold which will take a bike if it's boxed up well. And there's even a door to the cockpit! suggest giving Loganair customer services a call to check however...
Twin otter does Tiree, Barra and Campbelltown. Ain't no bikes getting on that one!
🙂 had a flight to Italy like that back in the 90s. 8 of us turned up with bike bags and kit bags, everything got checked in ok. But when we got to the plane the ground and flight crew were stood around looking very bemused, there was no way they were going to get everything in the "hold".
I've seen volvos with bigger boots.
Ended up with the back half dozen seats filled with bike bags........
Yeah the first Auckland Roto one I did was a bit like that, would have fitted but everyone had a hold bag...
Hand luggage was stowed on your knee
n+1 brompton?
