Hi folks,
A couple of weeks ago I suffered a minor subarachnoid haemorrhage. It happened when I was out on the bike climbing up a steep fireroad climb. Severe headache and neck pain. I put it down to a bad headache, and had 2 rides since it happened, before I went to GP and was then referred to hospital last week. An MRI scan confirmed I'd had a minor bleed on the brain.
I still have further tests to undergo, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has suffered this, and what state of fitness have they returned too?
Wondering if its going to be ebike time!
Cheers
Mick
Your age dictates how easy it is to rehab but I have known people have these and returned to normal life with no deficit even in their 60s
Take your recovery seriously and steady/slowly. If you're feeling fatigued, don't push it...and don't overdo it if you are feeling good. Can't really comment on an individual case, but if the SAH was minor, and you don't have other neurological complications, and the other tests you mention come back clear.... well, don't worry about buying the ebike just yet 🙂
Nothing useful to add other than take it easy and get well soon! Stay positive.
A very good friend who posts on here suffered one, we had just finished descending off garburn, pretty much exact same symptoms as you.
About 5 years ago? He's been fighting fit ever since. Must have been in his late 30s at the time.
Best of luck buddy.
Hi guys.
Thats all good to hear.
We're supposed to be in Maderia end of next month for a weeks riding. It may be a week of R&R now.
Thanks for the positive vibes.
cheers
Mick
Yes .February 14th 2017
I came home from work as usual and went into the kitchen to make a brew .
I felt like someone had hit me over the head .
I was on the floor screaming in agony and desperately trying to reach the kitchen light which was blinding me, completely unaware what the hell was going on.
Before this incident I had various visits over the years to my gp about headaches which is a pretty constant but low pain headache that I live with
I was 38 years old and lived alone and I managed to call for an ambulance which the lady on the phone said it sounded like I needed to take some paracetamol and hung up .yes seriously and I'll touch back to this later .
A call to my ex wife an an ambulance was enroute
Admitted to calderdale hospital within seconds of being in the building a Dr recognised my symptoms and swiftly did a scan and found my brain was bleeding .
There machine could only detect that there was blood and not where it was coming from .
There's 2 ways in bleeds .one can kill you quicker than the other.
A swift blues and twos to the LGI in Leeds where they have specialist equipment confirmed a bleed from the main brain itself .they inject dye which they did up through a main artery by the groin .
Only 2 surgeons at the time were able to perform the surgery to stop the bleed using platinum.
This is an invasive op and resulted in me contacting bacterial meningitis .
3 weeks in intensive care on methadone co-codimol and finally the headaches subsided and whilst my white blood cell count was low I was making great progress.
The nurses had to take blood every 15 mins and due to the meningitis had to spend ten minutes preparing to take my blood which got one nurse in a bit of an arsey mood which when your I'll is the last thing you need.
I was finally told that I would be transferred to jimmys who would be better at caring for me.
Upto this point I was told by my consultant that they have no idea why this happens as there is less than 9pence per person done into research of shy the brain bleeds but I'd been having a stressful time at work .small family company trying to make an honest living selling to the sharks that are Screwfix might of had something to do with it .
It took a further 3 MTHS before I could feel anywhere like myself again .
Fatigue was a big one but short term memory loss was just frustrating.
2 years 5 months on I still get headaches which at times are scary painful as you think it's going to happen again .
I occasionally muddle up words which is something I never used to do but other than that I'm all good .
I quit my job to do something far less stressful which has helped my general well being .
My ex wife took up the complaint with the ambulance service and was indeed played back my audio of the phone call I made and the lady told my ex wife that it was unacceptable and the member of staff had received intensive training and with my permission they would use my audio phone call in future training exercises.
I've done a ton of research into subarachnoid hemorrhage and I'm still none the wiser myself but I'm as fit on the bike as I've ever been .
sat in bed reading july 1980 at 19yo sudden banging pulsing headache, i think caused from heading wet leather football when hungover,( think medicine ball back then ) lumbar puncture test showed blood so off for CT scan with dye up through the groin.a few days later had clip installed. was in hospital for 10 days off work and driving 3 months found it really tiring during recovery and had some minor weakness in left side ,circulation on lhs is not great ( as bleed on rhs ) apart from these things full recovery nearly 40 yrs on feel quite lucky really as at the time approx 50 % not uncommon. never really had option not to have it clipped. no idea what protocol is now but good luck with your recovery
