looking for a lightweight, faster rolling 'all round' tyre combo (with good protection) for a downcountry (140/120) build (Transition Smuggler Carbon).
probably not going to do anything too extreme with it, so don't need to go down the DHF/DHR or DHF/Minion SS route (which i run on my other 160mm bike - 2020 Canyon Strive CF).
it's all a bit baffling to be honest, especially if i look at Maxxis, and a little less so with Schwalbe (NN/NN or RRay/RRalph), but I don't see too much spoken about Continental?
Outwardly it seems like a Mountain King out front (2.3" black chilli protection) coupled to a faster-rolling Cross King out back (2.3" black chill protection) would be a great solution, with pretty low weight too.
Anyone run this?
Planning to partner the tyres up with some Stans Arch Mk3 rims as need the bike to go on a weight loss to make it a bit of XC friendly (have a plan to cut over 1kg immediately).
can't really go over 2.3" on the back as the frame is pretty tight at the back).
cheers
I have run a MK (the older square knob version) for years out front on my 29er. I really rate it as an all round tyre that has been faultless, grippy, and yet fine on tarmac too. Out back I have run various things but not had such luck with the Conti tyres as they did seem a bit too flimsy for that application. My favourite combo was the MK front and a IKON rear. The new MK with the chevron pattern is a very rounded tyre and I don't think I fancy it as a front tyre. I have run one as a rear on my 27.5 FS and it is OK, but nothing special.
