Looking at new brakes and the MT7s are catching my eye.

I’ve ran all the usuals in the past, E4s, XTs etc but fancy trying the MT7s. They seem to get good reviews but looking for some real world feedback.

Thanks.

I wouldn't bother. Stick to XT's or get some Code RSC's. I was magura curious and never found anything massively compelling and they are a bit of a pain to repair.

Funnily enough I’m running RSCs now.

Was there anything in particular you don’t/didn’t like about them?

I'm running MT Trail Sports on my Solaris, the ones with the mismatching front and rear calipers and really like them. They are definitely not an on/off brake but stop my lardy 16 stone well enough akd feel really nice. Didnt find them too faffy to bleed either. I've got Hope v4's on my big bike and think there's a similar feel.

I've never had Shimano brakes so can't compare with this though.

I’ve got MT Trail Sports too (these are basically an MT2 rear and MT5 front - MT5 is a cheaper MT7).

I love them to bits.  Bleeding (after checking the official instructions) turns out to be the easiest bleed I’ve ever had out of Juicy, Elixir, Guide, Shimano servo wave various, Hope Mono Mini, Formula RX (no particular order).  Stopping power is great.  Control is great. Lever shape in the single finger Trail  lever is great (there are several lever profiles in the range right now including oldskool full hand so check what you’re buying).  Various power tests show the MT7 leaving everything but the boutique Trickstuff in the dust.

If you love the way overfilled Shimano feel then you will probably hate them.  The lever has travel!!! 🤯  The MT7 has a bite point adjust that should help overcome this if it’s an issue.  Pads are a bit of a pain in the arse as Magura aren’t the most commonly sold brand but they are available fairly easily.  The stock composite lever clamps will allow you to bury the screws into them if you overtighten, but there are alloy alternatives available and not all models come with the composite clamp - plus if you don’t overtighten it isn’t a problem.  Personally I’m sold and wish I’d had these a long time ago.

I echo the above, I have the trail sports set and love them, so much so I got some MT5's for the hardtail. Another great feature that has not been mentioned is the magnetic pad retention system, it means that for the first time ever I have not had to carefully adjust the calipers on a brake set so they dont rub. You just fit and forget and the brakes are fantastic.

I hated the 2nd hand pair that came on a bike initially. But after a millions bleeds, new hose & pads they are very very good, certainty par with saint for stopping power.

I have some spare saints ready to go, but have not felt the need to swap them over.

The levers feel a bit fragile, so if they fail or snap  I will fit the shimano m820 level & retain the calipers.

The RSC's are a better brake - get some uber bike race matrix pads when they are back in stock - it transforms them

Switching between two bikes, one with MT5's and one with XT's I prefer the MT5's. Wasn't initially keen on the longer levers but got used to them (shorted levers are available, though pricey). I just gravity bleed them then do a quick bubble bleed and all is good.

Bad point is the Shimano matchmaker clamp doesn't offer much alteration in shifter placement so I sacked it off and bought a shifter without matchmaker.

The screw in pad pin from Shimano also fits the MT5's as I had trouble sourcing replacement parts by Magura themselves when I replaced the pads. Some pads stay in just fine (the butterfly looking ones) while the 4 separate pads need then pin to keep them in place.

Really happy with my MT7s. Easy to bleed - but did need to do a couple of times to get them feeling just right. The official bleed video is good but needed to add in the lever wiggle extra step.

Super powerful but good modulation- and that’s Alps use for a heavyweight brake dragger 🤗

Thanks, some good feedback there.

I’m not a fan of XTs so glad to hear the MT7s have better modulation.

Are the MT7s quiet in the wet?

Been using my Code RSCs for a few weeks now, love the power but in the wet I just can’t get them to stop honking and it’s driving me mad. To be fair they quietened down during my last ride but that was in the dry, I’d swapped the rear pads for another brand and deglazed the fronts. I’m fully expecting them to do the same again on my next wet ride.

I’ve spent an age aligning everything, deglazing everything, cleaning everything and after years of silent easy Hopes it’s getting tedious.

alexxx, the Race Matrix pads aren’t in stock until the new year. If they’re definitely worth a go I may hang on for them to come back into stock. Are you running the in Codes? How do you find them?

Quiet in the wet may depend on the rest of your rig. Mine are running sinterered on RT76’s and they’re fine.

Since you mention alignment, I did go the Hope route with that of sighting the rotor in the calliper rather than doing the ‘slack it back half a turn, lock the brake and nip it up’ thing.  It was worthwhile.

Wondering what break pads ya'll prefer here:  https://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/magura-mt5-mt7-which-brake-pads-low-noise-good-performance-and-longevity/

Just ordered MT5s going from Avid BB7s, my first hydraulics!

OP, I have some barely used Race Matrix pads here for GUIDE's. Possibly 2 sets I think.

You can have them for postage BUT they don't fit the new type Bleeding Edge calipers.

PM me, of any use to you.

I used Uberbike semi organic in mine. Seemed quieter than the sintered (that Magura don't recommend) they came with as I bought second hand.

I now have a big box of Uberbike race matrix for all our Shimano brakes, seem a good balance of bite Vs longevity.

Poopscoop that’s a very kind offer, thanks, but after reading around it unfortunately looks like they won’t fit.

I’ve managed to get my grubby little mitts on a couple of pairs of the race matrix pads for my codes so will see how they go first.

vincienup, just running 180/200 centreline rotors with the codes (they are the ‘rounded’ rotors as that’s all that I could get at the time). Was using the original sintered pads front and back but then swapped the rear to Galfers.
