I've just ordered a trailgator to tow the little 'un around a bit and am currently thinking of getting an inbred or possibly a Surly karate monkey for a bit of fully rigid punishment, commuting and touring once in a blue moon. The trailgator blurb off eBay suggested the adult's bike needed at least 24" wheels, but will it work with a silly big wheel on the back? I'm thinking the bar will either clip the top of the rear wheel or the angle of the child's bike could be rather steep! Any experience on here with all you big wheelers? Cheers.
Mrs lipseal has one fitted to her hybrid with no problems, so I think you will be ok.
ran ok with 700c wheels for me
edit minimum wheel size is mentioned because otherwise kids front wheel may not lift off ground
ps don't leave fitting to kids bike to last minute can take a couple of goes to get right
On a slight hijack, any good deals/recommendations on trailgators at the moment?
Ive gpt one on my singular swift for kids outings, works just fine.
Yes.

(Tyre rubbed as it was set for 26", but works fine now).
It works fine - just extend it to the second hole.
Another hijack. Sorry
flatfish. I have one in the loft which I've been needing to get round to selling. Only used it twice (one my 29er). Email in profile if your interested.
Do people get on OK with these things? Every time I see one the kid's bike's twisting off to one side or the other and the nipper's having to hold on for dear life 'cos they're doing a wheelie the whole time. I dare say there's a degree of user error involved there, though 🙂 (Definitely user error in the case of the one I saw the other week setting off with stabilisers on the kid's bike...)
Got on fine with it (on a 26" MTB). Just make sure you do the bolts up good and tight as loosening of the clamp on the kids bike is what usually makes them twist. Happened to me, tightened them up, was fine for all the use it got afterwards.
Great bits of kit and the versatility outweighs any negatives in my view. I've heard people be negative about them for the tipping but IMO it's usually user error. The lad got towed round a number of trails in the Borders and Yorkshire quite happily and he got the chance to ride under his own steam, stoke his dad or put the feet up, all within any one ride. Trying mixing and matching with a dedicated tagalong, afterall, the whole purpose in my mind was to get him riding under his own steam but this was easier and more fun if he could do bits (or on occassions, not even ask to get towed but the option was there if he flagged).
Takisawa - is that child crying because of the shame and embarassment of being dragged behind some god awful clown bike 😉
Thanks fellas, 29er it is then, been tempted to dabble with one for a while, and heading off to the states over summer for a while should seal the deal... can't wait to ride the North Shore with on a 1x9, fully rigid trailgator towing monstrosity. That should keep the little one happy. Though by then I doubt she'll need me by then the rate she's going. Up the Taff trail from Talybont at just 4 unaided (a couple of pushes on the steep bits), Nicole Cooke better watch her back.
