Possibly my next move from a 26" five, chances of a test ride are slim due to size required but if you've got a picture of a 20" that would be great

They look long and low but I'm not sure if all the sizes I'm seeing are small frames

Large is 19in, XL is 21in.

I'm 6'2ish and ride a large, the XL would be way too big.

No sideways pictures I'm afraid though but if you're in the Lakes area give me a shout and you can have a look at it in the flesh.

Cheers all, yes a photo would be ace - just for a bit of scale.

I'm 6'5" and ride the 20" five so fancied the similar size, the 22" five looks dramatically more gate like

Hey Lummox, i've got a Five29 in size large. i'm 6'2 and wold suggest this would be the right size for you based on my experience.

Where are you based? I'm based near Surrey Hills, if any use give me a shout and you can have a go on it... it may be for sale soon if that's of any use to you 😉

I'll post up a couple of pics for you either way buddy.

This one taken before the reverb was added.

Gimme a shout if you're anywhere near either Surrey Hills or (weirdly) Scotish Borders (i'm there for a week from next wk onwards) and wanted to take a spin on it.

Cheers.

Hi Jed

Cheers matey that's just what I was looking for, looks just like my current five ( insert same design yadda yadda) nicely proportioned.

I'm fairly local in that I'm Southampton way and do find myself up the Surrey hills occasionally so will bare in mind your generous offer if I find my way up there soon.

Sadly new is my only option as I'll be after the warranty.

Have you any experience of a 26" version to compare? I'd probably be using it for trail centres and a smattering of enduro and beginner dh events too- well suited?

i've also got a pic on my home laptop with me next to the bike which will give you an idea of scale perhaps - if you think this will help i'll post this too. lemme know?

No worries I understand on the warranty thing chief, however the offer stands should you ever wanna test ride bring your wheels up to the hills and you can take a test spin.

I've not ridden the 26" version I have to be honest however have ridden the 650b version (rode a demo bike for a few weeks whilst mine was in under warranty ;)).

Hands down, in my personal experience anyway, the 29 version wipes the floor with the 650b based on my riding style anyway. When pointed downhill confidence was far more assured when riding the 29 in comparison. Climbing was noticeably quicker on forest tracks on the 29, however I have to say that when riding more technical climbs the 650b felt quicker and far easier to manouevre when faced with rocks, roots, tight switchbacks etc - however for me personally, I generalyl ride up a hill as a means to enjoy going downhill so the positives outweigh that particular negative in my opinion.

Anyway hope that helps and lemme know if you want a pic that you can gauge size and scale against and i'll post up later.

I'm 6' 2" and have a large (19") 5 29. Came to that from a 2009 26" 5. You'll love it as it feels like a 5 but so much faster. You will be right at home.

This is all music to my ears.

Cheers for all the feedback guys, was what I was secretly hoping to hear.

Jed I work to a very similar mantra 😉

At your height I'd be getting the XL. L is fine for me but it wouldn't want to be any smaller.

Also, after testing a few 650b 5's the other week make sure you get Pikes on it. The Fox 34's do not compare. I'll be banging Pikes on mine as soon as I can. Wouldn't worry too much about the rear shock though as the basic Fox one does the job just fine.

Fwiw I'm also 6'2" and I chose the XL 650b Five. I found its spot on, I think the top tube of the L would be too short personally.

I probably agree with Chestrockwell over size to a certain extent but I find the large is a big bike despite being 19" frame... I shortened stem (to 45mm) and stuck 780mm bars on and that made a massive difference.

In my opinion you should test large and x-large... if you're riding a 20" five on 26" wheels just now, it's possible you may find the XL 21" frame on bigger wheels a little foreign... depends on your riding style to a certain extent as well as your build. Defo try both sizes mate so you can be sure.

Good luck Lummox!

Totally.

I demo'ed a Five29 and a Five 650b for a few hours, back to back, on the same trails at GT. The Five 650b was a great little bike, but the Five29 just felt like something else, it's an immense bike, huge amounts of grip, and masses of confidence.

I'm 5'11 and on a medium, did wonder about the large, for the TT and reach, but the extra 2" on the seat tube would have meant a huge disadvantage for steep trails for me.

Can't recommend the Five29 enough, I'd recommend a Float X / CCDB or Monarch Plus if you're looking at an Alpine Five, as the trails it's aimed at are rough, fast and technical. Also, a Pike - or a Fox 34 with the Elite damper from Push. The standard 2014 CTD feels overwhelmed at times.

I only testrode a couple, haven't owned one but the 29er's a phenomenal bike- loved it. Couldn't find one for the right price when I was shopping for one 🙁 I really liked that even though it's a gigantic monster truck of a thing, on simple trails like glentress red it didn't feel like ridiculously "too much bike", it was still great fun and involving. Basically, ace.

(I loved the Trek Remedy 29er too fwiw)

Rode one at a recent demo, absolute beast of a bike, the large was spot on and didn't feel overly gate like.

Jedshred, if your selling drop us some info, might be tempted 😉
