Seemed to make sense to run a narrower version of a more aggressive tyres on full suspension and balloon tyres on your hardtail.
Just wondering aloud...

My riding buddy always goes 2.3 on his full suss. I'm 2.4 or 2.5 on my hardtail.
Probably just preference.

2.1's on both HT & FS. Titchy weeny things on the road bike.
Never had any real problems on any.

What am I meant to be compensating for?

Doesn't matter what bike you're on, less grip is less grip.
You might want to run bigger volume Tyres on a hardtail, or a rigid bike. But that's comfort.
