Hi All,
Has anyone ridden the tough-ish route, have GPX file?

http://singletrackmag.com/trailguide/uk/east-midlands/east-midlands/

Looking at getting out Monday, might be better bet than queuing up at Cannock.

Cheers..

The one that is linked on there as the toughish route is actually the intermediate one, titled tour of Ticknall and yes I've done that one. It's quite good, plenty of places to put your foot down. I'd recommend it and if you finish early just do the first part again or explore in them woods.

I live near Ticknell and rode most of that route yesterday, mostly dry and fast but bits of Robin woods still very muddy, still a good local ride though and you probably won't see another person, unlike Cannock!

I did the medium one when I was round that way for work once. Waste of good drinking time IMHO. ?

I did it yesterday asbrooks. It was a glorious ride with the weather being so nice.

If you feel up to it make sure you have a good blast in the woods, some great bits in there.

I only did the 1st loop as I rode from home as part of a 36 mile loop.

I must say I think it will be more pleasurable than Cannock on the bank holiday Monday

That's (Ticknall) my local loop, 15 mins ride out from my house and regular evening ride
It's a nice leisurely ride, nothing technical though but decent countryside
There are a couple of variations you can do to make it a little longer, beat bet is to look at Os map and link bridleways
And some cheeky bits in Robin woods worth exploring (as you enter woods turn right and there is some jumpy bits to the right of the perimeter track, there is also some short downhill runs in the area at the end of the track shown running north south on that ST map), follow same perimeter track right the way round and you should stumble on them

I was at Cannock yesterday and whilst people where queuing up for the carpark once past Watch out Trolls section I hardly saw anyone else until I got to Upper Cliff, trails where the driest I've seen them in a very very long time

The medium route south of Nottingham isn't great, again can ride to it from my house but only ever bothered with it once

You all need to head further north to the mountain biking Mecca that is Ilkeston. Miles of bridleways, towpaths and cycle paths you can play on for hours. None of it techy or gnarr though.

You are right - no gnarr at all!

Thanks chaps for the replies, I went to smiths earlier and bought an OS map as I didn't really think that anyone would have a gpx file. The bit to Bretby is on the other page...

I'm going to give it go Monday,I haven't the whole day so It's going to be an early start and finished by lunch time.

I know there are probably better places to ride, but it's local-ish enough for me than just plodding up the canal towpath.

How local, where abouts are you?
There is a fair bit of similar style riding around the area both north and south of Derby if you know where to look

iain1775, I'm in the centre of Leicester, so there's not a great deal of riding straight from my front door. Ticknull is only about 35 minutes drive for me and I don't particularly want to drive too far on Monday.
I don't mind going further afield, but I don't know where to look.

I do this route alot maybe 3x a week and i wouldn't travel from leicester for it. Im local in burton and id choose cannock over this everytime even if it meant queuing.

Robins woods ok but at the minute as mentioned its a bit boggy round the top and with the strong winds we had earlier in the years theres a few trees down.

I rode robins wood on tuesday and ended up walking a load of it around the edge just not much fun tbh.

That used to be pretty much my regular ride with some variations. I lived 5 minutes from the trail. It is quite fun with no real challenging sections unless you have fun in Robin Woods. It's shit when wet, Summer 2012 was awful.

Scandal, did you get your brake lines sorted?
I'll do this route tomorrow if you want to join me. I'm planning to get to Ticknall for about 9. give myself 3 hours to complete (hopefully) 🙂 .
I think Danny is planning another ride in the Peaks this comming weekend . If I can get a pass out, I'm in.

Asbrooks.

Slight thread hijack, but if you fancy a 21miler with about 700m of ascent I'm doing my standard local loop tomorrow morning (far less legal than the ticknall loop, but good stuff nonetheless). I need to be close to home for a couple of reasons, the primary one being that I nipped out on Friday evening and got another migraine.

As a result, I'll be taking it very easy tomorrow. Expected ride time about 3.5 hours starting in Woodhouse Eaves at 8-30am. Let me know what you think if you see this post, if not, I'll be going anyway!

You shouldn't need 3 hours to do the Ticknall route, not unless you stop for lunch at the Staff of Life, call in at The Wheel Inn and detour to The John Thomson 🙂

Nice one!

See you in the car park at 8-30am.

It's a pretty decent route, some road work required, but it takes in a lot of the decent stuff in the area whilst steering clear of most of the walker honeypots.

Three and a half hours will do it, but four would not be a problem. I'll be taking it very easy after my recent 'difficulties'!
