A friend is considering doing The Lon Las from Holyhead to Cardiff and back in April for charity and asked me if I'm up for it. Dunno about both ways (!) but I reckon I can do the milage one way at least over 4 days perhaps. Has anyone done it? where did you stay overnight? what stuff did you take on your bike? what tyres? what bike? (think I'd stick gears & rack on my rigid steel MTB with Schwalbe Marathon Plus) How much did it all cost?! Any info would be great. cheers.

Yes, did it on an MTB Tandems Fandango cardiff to holyhead over 5 days with the wife
1 set panniers, tried to travel light.
overnight at Brecon, Rhayader, Dolgellau, and Caenaerfon.
Specialized hemisphere armadillo tyres
few problems overheating hope M4 205,185 disc, had to be very careful descending.
Stayed in cheap B&B's so not too expensive

I did it 4 or 5 years ago, north to south.
I bivi bagged it, just staying beside the route late in the evening, and took a stove for a brew and breakfast. Got most food from shops and cafes.
I used a 26" wheeled tourer with road tyres. There were a couple of sections that I thought a mountain bike would be better, but the road tyres were the best overall.
I took 3 days including carrying on to Bath, but they were long days and was pretty tired by the end of day 3, so jumped on the train at Bath instead of carrying on to the south coast.

This features in this guidebook:

They recommend doing it in 7 days, so fairly steady! Probably going to ride it next year and stop at hostels / B&Bs, travelling with as little kit as possible. Need to decide whether to do North to South or vice versa - any recommendations?

did Dave Buchanons C2C Caernarfon to Cardiff in 3 and half days last year, camped at Dollgellau, round Nant Yr Arian, and Brecon good fun route see his site for details, cross bike would be ideal for 75% of it, Maxxis aspens ok tho! Pontsticill to Cardiff was all downhill and fast 😆

Hi kev - friend of mine did it a couple of years ago - 4 days, rode a rigid mtb with slicks, stayed in b&b's. I'll ask him for his route details if you want?

Cheers all. Sue - it's just a mates idea at the mo' but I'm gathering info just to see what I could be letting myself in for. I think the route's pretty straightforward, more wondering along the lines how much cash I gotta save up for accoms etc. Would you be interested?

Kev

Does it involve riding bikes?
Does it involve biking for several days?

Am I interested? Duh, yes! Of course 🙂

PS - are you off work any time on Friday or Sat? If you are, give me a shout if you fancy going biking.
