Do they ride similarly in any way? Is the Ti worth the extra moolah?

Thank-ee.

never ridden the steel inbred but ridden a fair few steel hartails and own a Ti 456. Initially i was sceptical of the whole titanium ride thing having spent most of the past couple of years on big 6 inch full sussers, but it is noticeably more springy than any aluminium hardtail I've ridden. Don't know to what extent the curved top tube is responsible for the ride quality but this is the only visible difference in frame design between the steel and Ti models. T'Inbred looks great and is maybe a pound or so lighter than the steel 456. To be honest with you it can't justify the price difference but you're a long time dead.

I have both and there is a definite extra something to the ride of the Ti version. It's not flex, but there is a softness to it that smooths out ripples and takes the edge off bigger hits. It's also much nicer to look at in the flesh than I expected from looking at photos of it.

Other than that, apart from being over a pound lighter than the steel version it is bascially the same bike as the geometry is identicle.

Whether it's worth the extra? From a head ruling the heart point of view, you'd have to say no. From a I want one point of view then it's up to you. tbh although they share the same geometry they are aimed at different sectors of the market so a direct comparison is not really fair. A better comparison, particularly in value terms, would be with a Soda, Ragley Ti or Hummer.

Cant recall ever reading a crap review of one!
Wasn't there a place in the peaks that had a couple of demo 456 Ti's ?

For a 20", my steel frame weighed 2520g/5.6lbs and the Ti weighed 1743g/3.8lbs.

Iv just taken advantage (or been take advantage) of the on-one offer and changed from steel to ti.

My thoughts after only a few rides on the TI is it feels tighter and makes me want to go and ride it all the time. The steel one is still a great frame but its heavy and doesn't seem as responsive when you stand up a really put some force through the peddles.

I think its been discussed on here a fair bit but if you painted them the same and didnt tell people then they wouldnt notice, Well thats pollocks you can.

Worth an extra £600 , is it four times better ? life time guarantee ? Its got a curved top tube. Anythings worth it if you can justify it in your own head.

I chose to sit with my old kit and change the frame rather then the other way round and
Im glad !!!

identickle ??

"because it's made of a particular kind of metal" is the last reason I'd use for riding when having fun, riding exciting terrain & seeing sights were available...

I'd think unless you've top spec kit you could probably save more weight elsewhere for £600.

But is weight be the all and end all ? not for me.

I brake things, I could save weight by running small rotors but i wouldn't stop ! (unless i spent £300 on new brakes)

I could save weight on light wheels but id brake them and spend a fortune call it another £300.

There you go justified it (to myself)

Iv got other bike i ride as well but i keep picking this one up !!! (novelty)

True, but you'd be able to save that same weight again on the Ti build at some point in the future.

You could see the steel versions as try outs and the Ti are keepers if you like the geometry.. you'll usually resell the steel version for a decent price after a year or two. Or you may feel absolutely no need to change and can spend the £600 saved on whatever.

I've had both and found the steel version to be stiffer than the Ti, with the Ti being a less harsh and of course lighter.

Didn't the mag do a comparison of the Charge steel and Ti frames. Two identical bikes, except one steel and one Ti. I think they also had different colour sadles to identify them.

They let anyone who came into the office ride both of them without letting on. And asked for comment.

Now I've set that up, for the life of me I can't remember the conclusion they came to.

Sorry if it wasn't ST mag, I do occasionally stray!

It was the ST, From what I remember from the article there was very little in it to be honest.

I was possibly reading it from the point of view of wanting the Ti to be proved better in order to justify my own purchase of a Ti hardtail, but was disappointed to read that there was little evidence if tested back to back.

The steel Charge is fairly light anyway. Tange Prestige IIRC. The standard 456 is a bit of a gas piper so there will probably be more of a difference between the two On-ones than the two Charges by my totally unscientific never ridden a Charge reckoning.

It's not my folt I was never tort to spell propar
