In a quest to put a bit of colour onto my up till now stealthy Jeffsy.
Got a few bits together, some direct from China and with the accustomed odd (to my western eyes anyway) branding.
So anyone managed to remove the branding from anodised parts? If the branding is really etched in it will leave a mark of course but I suspect it might not be in reality.
Why bother with all this? I'm just not sure I want to be looking at a part made by "GUB" for instance.😁
(I'm ok with a chain ring made by SNAIL as I see that as the universe extracting the urine over my current fitness levels...)
I guess you could paint it?
Sharpie do a nice range of colours 🙂
Weird isn’t it, I’m especially keen to try this after getting a chain ring direct from China branded ‘fat ****er’.
Acetone works on reg graphics apparently...
Not sure about laser etched....
Yes to acetone on graphics
A gathered assortment of coloured anodised parts is a recipe for looking a bit shite anyway.
I wouldn't worry too much about removing branding...
Coloured chainrings especially always look like the only reason for purchase is that they were going cheap somewhere.
@bedmaker come on, we've all done it at some point but you are right, chainrings should be black or silver.
Less is more!

Agreed . When they faux match your stem it looks like there has been a concerted effort to make your bike look shit.
Random coloured bit just looks like your a cheapass......
I'm.ok with being the latter.
Laser etched probably not coming off unless you rub it down and paint over. Or you could etch over it, like covering a tattoo. GUB could become GUBBINS which would be cool if you are actually called Fred Gubbins.
I ordered some wheels and specified no graphics, and my next imaginary project is a gravel bike with a ‘no logos’ frame. I have taken painted logos off stems - they were starting to look a bit tatty, and just a fingernail sorted that out.
I like a bit of colour but those over logoed bits just look crap. Always try to stick to one brand so at least the colour is the same .

A good few years ago now built up an OnOne inbred with as a single speed pub bike - using this philosophy to minimise its desirability and including a gold chain ring. Came out quite nice and is still in my garage. 😅

Lol😆
I'll try some acetone then, cheers guys. I'll have to order some, got loads of IPA but no acetone. Isn't that basically nail varnish remover from memory?

Yes, or false nail remover/dissolver. Check anything you go for is in fact 100% acetone, if you have a Sallys nearby that may be best.
Cheers mate, it'll either have to come from coop or corner shop as they are the only places I do these days. Or from eBay if all else fails.
Cheers for the, erm, multi coloured inspiration guys. I hope it doesn't end up quite as flamboyant though.lol
Random fact!
That there VW Polo Harlequin was built for a trade show to show all of the colours the new Polo was available in. 1995ish. It was so popular they put it into production.
I very nearly bought one! Which tells you all you need to know about my sense of taste. I see one quite often, a member of staff at the local Royal National College for The Blind has one. The jokes write themselves.
OP.
If the anodised parts are properly anodised there’s no getting the etching off. The etching process burns through the coloured layer down to the raw aluminium underneath. If you want no etching then it’s more expensive cheap tat you need.
Drop them in caustic soda (drain unblocker) and the anodizing will coke off leaving you with nice silver components.

IME at least. Did some bars with oven cleaner, took two goes to get the ano off and then absolutely ages polishing with the dremel...
@bigblackshed we nearly bought one in 2002, even had the teddy bear wheels... My wife was just starting out as a teacher in a nice village primary school, we thought it was a bit much 🙂
Fat **** chainrings
I’m definitely gonna need a link to that store . .
Anodising is a surface treatment that makes components last longer. Why would you remove it?

You over did it then. I have been stripping anodising since the early 80's. If anyone is old enough to have been riding BMX in early 80's pretty much every single part was anodised!
Leave it in too long and it goes black and needs a lot of polishing. Need to watch over it and remove as soon as looks clean and then hose with water.
You are unlikely to get the etched logos off though. If if doesn't comes off with 0000 wire wool then it probably isn't coming off.
I would also like a link to the 'fat f***' store. i might even pay extra for that.
