so I'm thinking of getting a moulton TSR and can't work out if they are eccentric brilliance or a bit daft. Intend to take a test ride soon but does anyone ride one and would care to share their thoughts? I like the idea of taking the frame apart to get it on flights easier than a standard framed bike.
thank you
I had a 1967 F type. It was fun. Then the forks snapped 🙁 . Moultons are fine bikes that rid very well, but they are not really "folding" bikes. The frame splits into two big lumps that are still difficult to transport.
If you want to travel with a decent handling UK-sourced bike, then Airnimal is what you want. If you aren't bothered about country of origin, avon valley cycles can supply a Bike Friday. These are far superior options to the Moulton for travel purposes - travel was never the raison d'etre for Moulton.
Never heard of them before but just seen some of them go up to £16000 😯
I've been commuting on a TSR - beautifully smooth to ride, and fast. I don't need to dismantle it much, it's shorter than a big-wheeled bike anyway, but it's a useful feature to have.
But I do occasionally sell them, so I'm a bit biased.
TSR rider here. Had it about five years. An inspired bit of design. Rides as well as they claim. Handles brilliantly. Fast and comfortable. Makes my regular road bike feel sluggish. Great for carrying luggage if you get the proper racks and bag. The optional frame split is a nice extra, but it's not the reason to buy one. That said I've found the feature genuinely useful a handful of times when stuffing it in packed cars etc.
Cons? Limited dealer network. Limited tyre choice. Some odd specs on the full builds. Rim brakes only (thought I'd be okay with that but turns out it's a biggy for me). Everyone asks you about it. All the time.
can't work out if they are eccentric brilliance or a bit daft.
The first thing!
I've only ridden one once and it was lovely. Super smooth ride and quick too boot. Looks like nothing else either, I'd have one tomorrow.
I've fitted discs to a few Moultons - needs some framebuilding and a repaint of course.
thanks for the comments - I have read that the ride quality is supposed to be excellent but there is surprisingly little commentary or published reviews on them. my main use will be audax and commuting but the possibility of sticking it on a flight a couple of times a year without the need to cart a normal bike box about is a real plus.
If you're anywhere near Glasgow, you're very welcome to come have a go on mine.
many thanks BC for the offer but unfortunately I'm south east based. cheers.
Yup, I have a TSR 27 & 30 both give a magic carpet ride on our rather potholed roads, most of the time anyway.
TBH, you either get the 'Moulton Bike' thing or you don't, most people still can't see past the small wheels, even 50 plus years on.
