Yes, one of our riders had one nicked from Byfleet, could be his.

Edit: although what makes you think it's nicked, doesn't look hugely dubious?

Description is wrong I think looks like pics show Spesh tyres not what's listed
And says nothing about the condition etc

ngee20, why not send a message asking what the frame number is. If the seller is legit, they'll be pleased to tell you and it can be checked with the police.

Your mate did have a record of the frame number didn't he?

Good spot! Even more reason to think it's dodgy!

Its not a large either, I think its a medium as the triangle in front of the seatpost is open in the large and closed in the medium as here

And if i was selling my bike 2nd hand on ebay, or anywhere, i'd make the ad a tad more personable so to speak... "Here i have for sale is my much loved Specialized Epic... It has this on it, i've done that to it", etc, etc. Very suspicious.

It is a 29er.

I text him, not his, was worth checking anyway!

Looks like a large too, didn't think they don't have the open triangle any more.

It's a bit weird, it's got a KCNC seatpost, which the description picks up on, (albeit clearly copied and pasted), looks like it may have bars too, but the tyres are wrong. I think it could just be a lazy seller.

Large 2011 Epic has open triangle and the colour scheme is the 26er S-Works Epic 29er had a different colour scheme

It is the same as my 26er so not a 29er.

29er colour here (2011)

Although looking at the new price for the 26er (£6199) is must be stolen! If you were selling that you would make it really personal. How long you've had it, where you bought it, how you looked after it. You wouldn't just copy and paste. Not on a £6000 bike!

Do the bidders not know what they are bidding on. I would think they would be a bit pished of to discover they have just spent a lot of money on a bike that is to small and not a 29er

SURPRISE SUPRISE!! THE LISTING HAS DISSAPEARED WITH ALL TRACE WHICH MEANS EBAY PROBABLY HAVE CAUGHT THE THIEVING SCUM OUT AND TAKEN ACTION. HE NEVER REPLIED TO MY PROBING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FRAME NUMBER SO WAS CLEARLY DODGEY AS HELL. HOPE HE'S DOWN THE STATION NOW BEING CHARGED.

Do you not think that sending 'probing' questions is entirely counter productive?

If it's a genuine seller you just irritate them, if it is stolen then you alert them to dodgy goings on. Unless you plan to do something other than shout on a forum it seems an entirely pointless course of action.

Who knows if it stopped him, it's stopped the police getting hold of the bike/him.

He (probably) still has the bike, but is not traceable now. Stupid.

you're*

I did nothing to alert the seller, which is more useful.

I know that if it was my bike I'd be seriously pissed off that someone like you took it upon themselves to basically send a message to the seller saying "I know that bike is stolen, you may want to scarper pronto before someone comes round to get it back".

But yes, must admit I did think it was a 29er, fail on my part!

POLICE? Are you seriously saying they would do jack shit. They would even look into it. Waste of time. If I was closer I'd have asked to view the bike then taken it off the guy and turned it in

Well done! Your logic is impeccable! I'm sure your assessment is probably 100% factually accurate. In your world, maybe he's weeping in a cell now, awaiting sentencing. Or he's just put it on gumtree. Or sold it down the pub

How is this internet vigilante thing working out for you, do you think? For what its worth, I see a flaw in the whole concept of it as a purely online activity

Another really helpful and misinformed comment re the Police chief31! For your information, last week when I was on duty there were three scumbags in custody, all different cases, two charged with cycle theft one with handling stolen goods. One of the charges came about as a result of an eBay ad and subsequent investigation. But of course, the Police do nothing!

Trevor.

Whilst eBay go and apprehend theives eh chief? 🙄

Did you actually alert eBay? Or just do your internet vigilante thing?

Like I say, if it was my bike, I'd hope to God you didn't see it.

Edit: and as a complete aside there are plenty of people with lots of money who wouldn't have a clue about a frame number! Having a nice bike (legitimately) doesn't mean you instantly become an expert. I've sold S-Works bikes to people who wouldn't have the first idea where to look for a frame number!

Did nothing when my scooter was stolen. Called them and said it had been taken from my garage they said we will be there at 7pm that day. Guess what yep nothing. They turned up at 7am the next morning when I was going to work. GREAT SERVICE. one said you won't find that and looked at the lock that had been broken and just said no point in looking in there for any evidence and the other fool just kept saying THATS OVER THE WOODS BURNT OUT. It really did help me out I must say. Took about two weeks to give me a crime number so I could start the 4 month claim process.

Like this?

[IMG] [/IMG]

Does not mean that they are going to do nothing with this as its a few thousand etc rather than a £30 scooter.

I know its not the value but say the bike was stolen and the original owner was bidding and going to um "collect" when he won the auction. Now he cannot.

OP is obviously good intentioned, but not sure it was a particularly sensible approach to take. Much better to go about things more subtly, let the owner win the auction and arrange collection, then let the police take over.

The police DO NOTHING. Alerting the seller instead of reporting the ad to anyone is what brings stolen bikes back.

If your prized bike was STOLEN would YOU be happy if when it turned up on eBay, someone emailed the seller making it obvious that people had sussed that it was DODGY? Thus reducing the chance of FINDING it?

To be fair, wwaswas.

There is alerting, and there is probing. Given how the guy conducted himself just now, I'm sure it was the gentlest of probes.
