Bike swill be going on holiday soon and my paranoia runs wild about transporting them.

What I'd like it some dummy axles to stop the drop outs being compressed. Does anyone know of someone making dummy axles for 142x12 and 100x15 dropouts?

Studding, lots of nylocs and big repair washers (backed by plastic washers to save scratches)?

Go to the bike shop they should have some plastic ones.

Or studding as mentioned above is cheap and easy to do.

Cheap plastic pipe cut to length and then use the axle to hold it in place. Worked for me for 10 years of travel.

These are for bolt thru. I was wondering if anyone made tubes of the right size which could then be retained with the specific axles supplied with the bike.

Piece of 3/4 plastic overflow pipe the right length and pop the bolt back. Won't move far enough to cause any issue.

Plastic pipe or a block of wood with a hole drilled through.

If you want to be fancy then buy some carbon fibre tube from easy composites and cut it to length. You should be able to find some with the right ID for each axle to make it a nice fit.

I really would use your axle back in the bike as it stops you forgetting it.

I used a spare handlebar grip for the rear and a bit of cut waste pipe for the forks.

I use some coiled up and taped corrugated cardboard. Plenty strong and won't scuff your frame or forks. Wrap it around the axle but leave it just loose enough that it is easy to reuse repeatedly

After Easyjet managed to bend my forks on a recent trip I was wondering how I could add extra protection to the bike bag. Thought dropping a few cheap plastic footballs in the bag might stop it being crushed and weigh nothing. Haven't tried it but it was a thought.

Plastic tube pretty easy to come by.. Every frame I've bought has had one attached for transport anyway?

If you're after a more 'proper' solution, why a dummy axle? Just buy a couple of converter axles and end caps from superstar and use those. Or hunt out a really bad hub and strip it.

CRC bike bags come with just the things you're talking about, hub inserts i think they're called.

They're just a tube the right length and dia, can't see how they're better than a plastic tube cut to fit.
