Doing up a bike for the eldest and, as I'm not making the frame this time, I thought it might be nice to make some cranks.

Will try and work out sizes/offsets etc from an existing crank.

Anyone else done it?

I wonder if you can get a forged 'blank' of suitable size, or would billet just do the job?

I've horrible memories of US made billet cranks that were made to look nice and hit a target weight.

It's only for a 7yr old so no major problems with strength so billet should suffice. We've got some nice 7075 aluminium in the stores I can use..

If I was to use a Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket is the length of the spindle (between the 2 inner faces of the crank) critical?

I was thinking of having a bit of adjustment in the non-drive-side position..

If I had all the time in the world and your obvious skill set and access to macine time, I'd have 'tried' to come up with a tube based crank like these ciamillo cranks where the end is able to slide up and down and secured by pinch bolts allowing some growing room.

I would imagine that the critical size is the length of the spline in the case of HT2 (and even that probably no better than +/-0.5mm. The rest can be tweaked with spacers, can't it?

Are you thinking of a full billet driveside crank and spindle, or a separate steel spindle permanently fitted to the drive crank?

Watching with interest, I enjoyed the balance bike thread. Stuff like this makes me miss my machining days!

That's a bit posh Bearback, bit out of my league.

Bull, thinking billet arms a steel axle
