Hello
I have a great ride to work when I have time to take the fun route: it goes along canal paths, across fields, through a wood, over a few wooden bridges, etc. I'd like to make a video of the route, and I was considering getting a GoPro or similar.
However, my phone has a great video camera, so I was wondering if it would be possible to use that? Has anyone tried this? And if so how did you attach it to your bike?

Alternatively, has anyone tried any of those cheap GoPro clones available on Amazon?

Dont.

It'll be as dull as a wedding video. 😂

It's just for fun - I'm not going to try to persuade Channel 4 to show it. Anyway, I'm a good editor 🙂

Barry Godin makes some great videos using just a smartphone.

I've made videos using an Android phone and with a cheapy GoPro copy. Both are plenty good enough in turns of video quality for me, so I reckon an iPhone would be too.

It'll quadruple the length of your commute though.

Hi flyingmonkeycorps

ha, yeah, i have some idea of how long it will take. How did you attach your phone to your bike to do the filming? I was thinking maybe something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aonkey-Universal-Bicycle-Handlebar-Samsung/dp/B077PNQ8T4?pd_rd_w=jG3kY&pf_rd_p=0331ee17-1a3c-47df-90cc-487c0ff33fea&pf_rd_r=R7RVT2MZXCTE538490NC&pd_rd_r=8d692bfe-63d8-47df-9b9c-4ca504372320&pd_rd_wg=Hg7IK&ref_=pd_gw_cr_simh

Generally the best angles and shots are ones not attached to you or the bike, if you can take your time and get creative with that it will be better just any case and something to hold it in place will work

I once made a chest mount for a phone from cardboard and duct tape. It fitted onto the sternum strap on my backpack.
For what it was it worked fine, might be worth a try.

@joemmo
That sounds great, I'll give that a go. It'll give a bit of view variation if nothing else.
@mikewsmith
Thanks for the tips. It's a bit more ambitious than I'd planned - I just want a 'this is my ride' film rather than a work of art. Maybe a few scene shots as it's a pretty route, but I don't think I'll be doing many third person takes.

As above, I've not chest or bike mounted the phone, I tend to prefer off bike angles (plus the chance of me falling off and smashing up my phone is too high!).
