Yeah, the Tweed Run is what I'm going to. But last year we were the only bikes on the train (just as well, as Pashleys are way too big for the space allocated).

I think you're talking about Virgin Trains.
I came across a similar problem recently trying to book for early May from Dumfries. I called the call centre to book a bike (can't do it online) and they tell you it's full. Odd. I called a day later and got a much more helpful chap who said bike space was not yet released, but he didn't know when.
I then twigged that for some reason bike reservations are linked to the release of Advanced tickets.
So have a look on the Virgin website page ways to save and you can see when the advanced tickets become available which they aren't yet for the 14th May. I then used thetrainline tickect alert to send me an email when the advanced tickets became available to get in and book (I was desperate to get my bike on one particular train!).
Once the tickets were released I messaged Virgin Trains on Facebook (sorry) and got a near instant booking without any of the call centre hassle.
It really shouldn't be this difficult to get a bike on a train!

Project - I guess I'll be with the hoi polloi.

sgn 23 - but oddly I was able to book my gravel bike up to Bangor for the following week (20 May) for our epic coast to coast. Let's hope I don't get the bikes mixed up, I'm not sure the Guv'nor's ready for Coed y Brenin...

f_j they seem to occasionally release tickets out of order, so the 20th is available now but the 14th isn't. it is odd.

Can you not ride down to Bletchley instead of MK proper? Trains are between 45 mins and an hour so not that much longer and still into Euston

sgn23 has it. Just been to the station and got some tickets. But why on earth are they released out of order ?

Anyway, me and the Guv'nor will be doing the UK's silliest sportive dressed totally inappropriately. Excellent.
