I've read on mtbr that they have weak sidewalls and was wondering what you all thought before I decided to get some. non exo versions btw...I'd be getting 2.25s if it matters. Thanks!
Seem pretty robust to me.
I used to use a 2.1 (i think) as a rear on my HT.....they were a pinch flat nightmare riding in the lakes. Wouldn't recommend them if you ride anywhere near rocks.
they seem to be robuster than the Rubber Q's i'm using now.
rode 2.4 advantage for 18 months (rear only) inc one season guiding in the alps. only 3 sidewall tears in that time. all repairable with good old dental floss.
the Rubber Qs are two months old and already have two sidewall tears. (also patched up using dental floss).
Been riding them for 6 months and only flatted once. I do do find the side walls pretty flexible and rolley in off camber corners though. It is getting annoying as I automatically think I have flatted or my bike is falling apart.
oh dear...i ride in pretty rocky terrain...this does not sound good so far...
never had a flat.
Never flatted mine but they are ust.
used mine in lots of rocky areas and not had a prob. don't fret, go ride.
not fretting just trying to be informed 🙂 thanks for the info so far guys
Not a bad rear tyre, sidewalls are fine.
stuartlangwilson- how about as a front...looking at possibly pairing it with an ardent rear, thought it'd give me more grip up front.
Got them on my 29er - tubeless rear, tubes front - had one pinch flat on the front, local riding is rocky - I like em
2.25 maxpro front and rear on my Zesty, absolutely love them. I ride Dartmoor which is rocky, and trail centres and never had a flat
What rims and tubes are you to use? I found narrow rims and standard XC tubes meant lots of punctures under 50-60psi, front or rear (2.25" btw)
Mavic XM719 I reckon were only just about wide enough to get away with them, though cornering was never really right without running the front pretty soft and noticably fairly unstable
Maxxis freeride tubes let me run more sensible pressures without pinchflatting all the time
Mostly ridden (successfully/appropriately) in the peak btw, though a load of other stuff too
The sidewalls aren't exaclty beefy. I've a sidewall slit in mine. Though the claimed weight is 660g, fairly uncommon for the massive size they come up as, I reckon overall (volume plus tread) are the same as a 2.5" High Roller/Minion
Nope. But it's nowhere near as rocky as The Lakes around here. I did go down Snowdon and ride at CYB, which are both quite rocky, without pinch flat problems.
Bikeryder85, i prefer something with better side knobs like a minion or high roller as a front tyre. Even my most xc bike has a minion!
They tend to 'tramlline' quite a bit on the front.
Much prefer an Ignitor.
Never pinch flatted one though: 13 stone, rocky terrain, 25-30 psi.
EXCeption series too, which have lighter sidewalls.
Been running 2.1 Advantage Exception since last October including Lakes riding over Easter - admittedly run tubeless so pinch flats not an issue but they coped with the Lakeland rocks and survived. Since swapped the front for a 2.2 Rubber Queen as the Adv. on the front didn't inspire confidence in loose stuff.
The Rubber Queen seems to be better for grip but also the way it copes with roots, rocks etc. I'll keep the adv. on the back though.
I had a 2.1 on the back which flatted all the time as the sidewalls are so fragile. I've got 2.25's both ends now which are much more sturdy. No flats in the last year running ghetto tubeless.
2.25's on my Flow rims for 3 years with stans tubless kit no problems.
I run my 2.25 non exo ones tubeless on crests with no issues so far and about 12 months of riding with 20psi in each. Rode the same pair for a couple of months prior to that with no flats. Mainly ride in the peaks and they're one the group's favourite tyres.
Standard 2.25's run on 823's and 819's as tubeless, running 30psi in very rocky places and absolutely no problems with the sidewalls ripping. Works really well as a rear tyre.
The 2.4 on the back of my coiler has picnh flatted a couple of times now and I've put a small tear in the sidewall. Not the wimpiest tyre in the world but could be better.
thanks alot for the feedback everyone, james- I'll be running narrower xc rims as I can't afford new ones right now...got 2.3 wtbs on them now tho...maybe I should wait till i get wider rims?
