Eyeing a Specialized Tarmac but wondering if it's worth pushing for a bit of cash off the RRP. Anyone had any success?
Recommendations for an alternative also appreciated. Needs to be semi-aero climbing bike aka Canyon Ultimate / Giant TCR etc. Must have Di2 or eTap and discs and no hoses or Di2 wires flying around the bars.
Would order the Canyon Ultimate SLX but there are loads of people who've posted on Trustpilot in the last fortnight saying that no bikes are being delivered and Canyon going silent on them.
What can you offer the store to make it worth their while giving you a discount, and effectively taking a hit on margin?
Ask them (and I mean ask, enquire, not expect) "Is there any payment method that works better for you so you can do a bit of a deal?". But equally, be ready for them to say no, they don't owe it to you.
Is a Specialized store the same as an LBS that sells Specialized? If so, yes!
Well if its in stock you could just pop down to https://www.canyon.com/en-gb/shop/showroom-testbikes/
The showroom ans collect. Looks like they have no larges left, the order process I had was a follow up phone call to confirm and a UK number to call for help.
Just wait till the end of year sales it will only be a month till the 2020 bikes are out
Tell them you want to buy a bike and ask them what they can do to persuade you to. Its not like the daft 'i begged a watch shop to allow me to touch a Rolex' thread, they are just a bike shop. What else do you need, accessories and stuff?
@Flaperon why not, depending on how close you are to cheap flights over they will look after you, get you sized up right and were doing set up for customers in store when I was there with any swaps etc that were going on, plus cafe is nice too - it would of course depend on the price difference between the Canyon and the Spec to see if it would cover the weekend away!!
If you can't get a cash discount try and get a free set of pedals for example. Huge mark ups on cycling equipment and I would never pay RRP for anything.
Huge mark ups on cycling equipment
you should see the markup on stuff with a huge mark up!!
Huge mark ups on cycling equipment
Go on then, give us some examples.

The Specialized concept stores are all franchises, so effectively an LBS with a load of branding plastered over it. Yes there are deals to be had, in the same way there are in any shop.
Re ‘huge markups’ I don’t know what you think is ‘huge’ but I suspect it’s very similar to what other areas of retail refer to as ‘minimal’
Rather than discounts, 10% of the value of the bike in accessories / other kit is the norm - margins are slightly higher so gives them more leeway.
Yes there are discounts to be had on Specialized bikes just the same as any other brand.
Asking what's your best price as soon as you walk in to the shop may not be helpful though.
Shop around a bit and be nice to the people you talk to
I tried haggling their tyres down to 26". No joy.
Yes, always. Specialized dealers will give you 12.5% off the price or the equivalent in accessories if you ask.
Have a look at any web deals for the Tarmac & see if the local shops will match or get near to the price
Last November I bought a Roubaix from the LBS.I think they were £2600,I'd seen them being discounted on the web for £1950 I asked the LBS if they could get one for £2000 then I'd give them the money.
I got them to get the on-line ad up on their computer & they agreed there & then.

Thought that was turn-ups not mark-ups!!!
My LBS gave me 'VAT off' a 2010 Stumpjumper FSR in Jan 2010, which at the time was 17.5%.
I didn't really ask; was just chatting with the sales guy and he said he could do me a deal on the price. I was expecting 5% or maybe 10% at the most, but he came out with the offer of RRP-VAT.
I'd already taken the demo out for a ride & had chatted with him about it, so he knew I was strongly likely to buy. Not quite sure why he offered such a nice discount, but it was appreciated anyway!
if it’s worth pushing for a bit of cash off the RRP
I just don't get the need to do this, do you haggle for everything you buy? Granted it's accepted practice when buying a car and when paying cash for things outside of the normal world of shopping, but would you walk into Currys / PC World and haggle over the price of a massive tele?
