[Closed] Anyone had tolerance issues with Hope tapered headsets?

Very strange one.

Had a set of tapered forks with the OE tapered headset, but couldn't get a reducer crown race for new forks. So now i'm running normal 1&1/8th forks in a tapered headtube.

Bike is the new standard ZS tapered headtube (55.9mm ID lower cup, 44ID upper cup).

Hope do a specific headset and the relevant reducer crown race to make it work.

However, i've been trying to fit it today, top cup goes in fine, but the lower cup sat way to proud of the headtube on looks alone when offering it up. Tried it anyway, just to make sure, and there is no way on earth it's going in without some serious damage being caused...

So I popped in to work to pick up some digital verniers, and measured the headtube, which is as near as damn it bang on 55.9 ID. Time to measure the Hope lower cup & that is 57.1mm?? 1.2mm out on a high tolerance press fit item is pretty shocking.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have noticed the semi integrated cups are pretty tight, but not tight enough where it wont go in, just that it tends to pinch the bearings a little.

Yep, i've experienced a very tight fitting Hope 1.5" reducer headset before, it was an absolute beast to get in (and out again - pretty much ruined it on removal, having to resort to a punch & mallet) but this seems to be an actual tolerance issue.

I guess i'll have to put a call into them tomorrow & find out whats going on.

IIRC the 1.5 spec defines the size of the headtube, with tolerances, but not the headset, madness!

Hence the issue a few years back with some FSA headsets splitting intense headtubes (amongst others).

Juan,

Yep, I am aware & I have a couple of 'normal' 1.5" headsets (51.9mm ID) spare which I tested prior.

57.1 is not a known standard of any headtube ID. hence why i'm 99.9% sure its a tolerance issue.

Unbelievably there is a 55mm and a 56mm 'standard' as well as the 52mm.
57mm sounds like a cock up

Benji had some sort of related problem when building his Pivot. I will have a dig about as headsets interest me.

That would be handy if there was some info.

I can probably get this turned down at work on a lathe, but i'm somewhat reluctant to for obvious reasons.
