I have two brand new XG-1275 (GX) 10-50t cassettes installed on two brand new DT Swiss XD drivers and both of them have a distinct wobble. One is slightly worse than the other. The cassette is definitely not cross threaded on the driver in either case and I have removed and re-seated both but the wobble is still there. There was no wobble at all on the PG-1230 (NX) cassettes they replaced.
I have Googled it and found a few other reports of a similar issue on GX cassettes but I'm not sure if it is acceptable or not.
Anyone else seen this?
Video below:
They're all doing it, which suggests the cassette is not perfectly concentric to the axle/hub.
I've seen this when the freehub thread was crossed.
The thread is definitely not crossed and I have two that do it on two different wheels.
So, some further investigation... I put a pencil on the stay and moved it closer bit by bit to the cassette while it was spinning so it was rubbing on the wobbling bit as indicated below.

I then removed the cassette and placed it in a flat surface and pressed the edges as per the video below (you can see the pencil mark which is where I first start pressing):

Now given that these are both brand new and exhibit the same issues I am thing it has to be a QC issue - unless, which is my question really, unless they all do this. I only have experience of 2. I have refitted my NX cassette on one wheelset and it's absolutely fine.
Thoughts?
Yes, I've had this issue recently. Went back to the LBS and tried another gx casette with the same outcome. Poor quality control it seems. I ended using a tiny wedged spacer to get the cassette to sit properly, out of sheer stubborness. It was the only way I could get it to shift well in all gears. In hindsight I should have just bought a shimano freehub and casette. Or stumped up for an Xo casette.
That's interesting to know - my experience of the shifting is that it's not as smooth as the NX cassette and some gears are noisy (8 and 6 in particular). 8 clicks and although I can dial most of it out using the AXS MicroShift, if I dial it out completely it introduces noise elsewhere. I had also previously posted about the chain not engaging in the top two cogs (bottom gears 1 and 2) and I wonder if this issue is related. The consensus seemed to be that the engagement issue was not apparent under load but I have definitely experienced it once or twice while riding.
So just by way of an update for anyone who is interested...
I took the cassettes into my LBS who confirmed they are wobbly and are sending off to SRAM for a warranty claim. Good stuff as I didn't buy them there (I did buy my new bike there though) - assuming they get replaced that is. Does leave me thinking SRAM QC is a bit meh though as this was two wobbly cassettes. In a fit of "what the hell" I bought an XO1 cassette to try and it is a billion times better than the GX cassette. It's straight for a start, but immediately I could tell that the shifting was silky smooth and very very quiet when running. I haven't ridden the XO1 yet as it's pissing down again but I am thinking currently that it is well worth the extra £££ particularly if you wax your drivetrain. Still, bloody expensive though - it had better last three times as long as the GX....
XO are easier to undo as you can get the cassette tool in further.
Yes I had 3 off wiggle all the same before the 4th one was perfect
I kept putting the old worn one back on to check and that was perfect
Also tried it on the new e bike did the same
Pretty poor really. The place I bought it from said they have sold hundreds and hundreds and have never had one warranty claim. Not sure I believe that unless most people are not noticing it. You would have to have the bike in a stand really to spot it - apart from the crappy shifting and noise that is...
Just saw this thread. I bought a two or three from R2 bike when they were around the fifty quid mark a while back. The first one had a pronouned wobble - so much so that I fretted that I had somehow cross-threaded it. The second one wobbles a bit, but not as much. I guess the carrier-bonding-in team had a liquid lunch one friday and decided to blast through the work pile to get back down the pub ASAP. It is deffo to do with the carrier piece not being in straight. On 11 speed it only caused an issue with shifting when other bits were coming to end of life. It is annoying because the casettes are pretty bombproof otherwise and extremely hard wearing.
Both of mine have gone back to SRAM and I’m awaiting a warranty replacement decision… the shifting on both was awful as mentioned above. I’ve bought X01 cassettes in the meantime which are stupidly expensive but at least they work OK - that said I have had to dial out an issue whereby it started not shifting down efficiently from 11 to 10. Couple of clicks on the AXS microshift seems to have sorted it but odd that it just started after about 60 miles.
Update in case anyone else has the same issue - SRAM have warranty replaced both cassettes. Not fitted either of them though as they are now surplus to requirements but I would assume they are now straight…🤷♂️
