Anyone had a seized XD driver hub?

XD hub on my son's wheel won't come off. Cassette is off, end cap off, but hub won't pull off. I've tried partially screwing the cassette on and using that to give a bit more leverage but don't want to go to crazy on that and damage it.

I've given it a squirt of penetrant spray and will have another go tomorrow, but has anyone managed to remove a seized one before? Any tips?

What hub is it? I’d it’s similar to a hope it’s probably just the green seal being stubborn holding it in.

I’d screw the cassette up so it’s very nearly tight and then use a socket set extension bar to tap against the back of the cassette on the most solid bit of the cassette you can find. Works a treat on the pro4 - couple of taps and it’s off.

edit - just to add - you have removed any end cap on the hub that might be holding it on?

It's a DT Swiss hub. Not sure which exactly though.

Edit: e1650 wheelset on a canyon strive.

Got it off, cheers Joe you gave me the confidence to go at a bit more.

Stuck a chain whip between the cassette and spokes to spread the load a bit more then tapped it out. Needed a bloody good tapping though. Now to see if cleaning, regrease and putting back together helps a 'not engaging properly' issue. I've never worked on a star ratchet hub....

Good luck - it sounds like it could just be very gummed up. The dt Swiss freehubs normally come off pretty easily. I’ve got a different make of ratchet hub and it’s just a spring loaded ring sort of thing - not many moving parts at all.

This became a feature of one XD driver I had that got particularly stubborn. It was a matter of partially undoing what could be undone, then popping the whole lot off using a taped up chisel behind the body using the bases of the spokes to lever from.

Yeah, left it all soaking overnight, and am gonna buy the locking tool and take it all apart and clean it all up.

I bought the bike off a mate and know he's ridden it hard but just need a bit of TLC now.

Its fairly common for the freehub bearings/spacer tube/axle to end up stuck together due to corrosion.

If its not to bad you can normally tap or lever it off, if they are really stuck I use a gear puller, insert for the end of the axle and bits of old cassette.

I don't think this will help much. The spline ring only prevents you from removing the central bearing. Unless you have a problem with that, then I don't think it's worth the (significant) hassle of removing the spline ring. It's all separate from the freehub mechanism, anyway. Take the rings out, give them a good clean and re-grease (ideally use the proper DT grease). If it's still skipping you'll need new star drivers (which are not too expensive).

Yeah figured I may as well take the whole thing apart while I'm in there. Give it all a good clean and regrease. Also for future bearing changes. I've got 2 sets of DT Swiss wheels now.
