need a new (cheap) commuter....found a carrerra subway 1 in Halfrauds for £216 after a few discounts. The subway 2 gets very good reviews. The Subway 1 is the cheaper version with cable discs and more basic groupset. seems pretty ok for what its gonna be used for (short journeys to work and station). any real world experience of them?
I had a Subway 2 for many years and loved it. With narrow semi slick tyres it was extremely fast. It was ideal for the 3 mile journey to work. Then some barsteward nicked it and I now use an old GT. I wish I still had the Subway.
My old boss has got one from a couple of years ago. A commuter and now has a kiddy seat on the back.
Very nice bike for the money, cheaper than a decent secondhand MTB, a service and new tyres.
Think it's had a new caliper due to salt corrosion, he's not asked me to fix anything else.
Why not?
I bought the black one with cable Tektro brakes years ago. Rode it through all weathers for about 3 years and never gave it any maintenance. Did a sterling job.
I've just recommissioned it with a single speed conversion and Avid hydraulic brakes, still on original everything else and it still rides well and does the job.
