out in the peak saturday, hired a trek rail from bike garage for the missus and i had my whyte e150 (bosch gen4). it has never been anywhere near a tuning box and until now has been flawless.
randomly got a 504 errror (thinks a tuning box is fitted). i took the battery cover off and the screw i have to allow me to pull the battery out (whyte battery removal is stupid) had fallen out and was rattling around in the cover.
bike garage cleared it for me and upgraded to tour+, and 85nm whilst he was at it (for free mind, top marks there) and it hasnt come back. not really ridden it.
im hoping the screw rattling around might have caused a short or something and that caused the 504 code.
anyone had a 504 when you did not have a tuning box fitted - and if so do you know why? speed sensor perhaps?
if it comes back twice more the motor is bricked and i have to buy a new one
why would you have to replace the motor on a hire bike?
my bike - ignore the trek stuff its irrelevant. shouldnt have included itr
i had my whyte e150 (bosch gen4).
Could the battery have momentarily lost connection because of the missing screw and thrown the error?
The random 504 errors were caused by over enthusiastic anti-tamper software on the early release Gen 4s and I haven't heard moaning of a 504 error since the first firmware update back in 2020.
yes i hoping its the screw.
now its got the latest software and hasn't got a screw flapping about where it shouldnt be that will be the end of it 🙂
Where you just waiting at a gate a bit too long maybe?
earlier versions of the bosch cx gen 4 firmware would sometimes throw the 504 error even when you hadnt fitted a tuning box, you'll be fine, ignore and carry on

as in sitting with my feet on the pedal so the motor is trying to drive? ive tried to train myself out of that as it cant be good for it.
oh i see. far too clever for me im a dumb mechanical engineer..
Whyte battery removal / refitting is indeed a pita. I made myself a little handle to haul the battery out using a curtain hook and a bolt. What age is your bike, I could probably do with a software update check?
mine is a 2020 (i think!) or maybe 2019
its an e150 rs 27.5 - it was replaced by an e160 the next year

LOL you beat me to it
