Currently I have a pretty old but still reliable Garmin Edge 200 but I'm looking for something with a little bit better navigation capability. Having looked at the Garmin range and capability of importing routes to follow etc. (downloading other peoples Strava routes/ creating routes on strava and exporting them to the garmin) I really can't see any point in investing any money in another GPS when if I could just see strava on my phone whilst riding, this would tick every single box!

So this brings me to my main question... Can any of you guys/ girls recommend a phone mount for my MTB which will not have it hanging out the front of the bars? (don't wanna destroy my phone every time I fall off).

I currently use the K-mount top cap for my garmin and I like how this keeps it out of harms way. I really like the look of the quadlock stuff, but the stem mount one wont fit (using a 35mm stem) and I'm not sure that if I reversed the 'Out Front' quadlock bar mount, if it would clear the stem?

I'm all ears! Cheers.

Expensive but really really good... Quadlock.... (Totally worth it in terms of what it does, totally overpriced for what it costs to make)

Even with the phone off the bike I keep it in the fairly waterproof (You can't go diving with it but rain wise it's waterproof) and scratch proof hard case...

+1 for Quadlock. Just buy a case for the 'phone that you like and stick the universal Quadlock mount to it.

Then simply put the phone into it's case when you want to mount it to the bike.

Is the quadlock pretty secure out on the trails? Like it's not going to shake its self off?

Waterproof you say? Isn't the case just more of a back protector? This is all I can find...

I was thinking about getting this mount and rather than having it 'out front' spinning it 180deg and trying to have it so the phone fits over the stem.

ORRRRR....

Has anybody used the standard quad lock stem mount bracket and mounted it on the top tube? I ride a steel hardtail so I'm thinking the mount would sit nicely on the tube, with the added bonus that its not gunna get smashed up guite so easily?

Very secure !!!  You get bands + ziplock.... I used both but I don't think I needed to... the phone won't come out of the lock bit and the mount onto the bar is just enough to spin a little when you OTB.

Last weekend I was using it on DH ... (to use the timer on the phone as it was too much faff using my iwatch and then trying to put gloves on/off and by the tie I had I couldn't catch Jnr who I was meant to be timing)

Waterproof ?  Case is a hard back (locks onto the quad lock) and then a "clear condom" (unribbed) that covers the face and the charger hole/headphone as well.. Ooops they call it a poncho....

You can't submerge it (for long) but in terms of rain it's been through torrential ..you can't use the touchscreen though when it's wet...

I wouldn't hard mount it... the ability to rotate on the bars is what protects the phone in a crash...

Or you can get the universal kit...

Thanks man! I never thought about allowing it to rotate in a crash... I think I will go for the kit you've shown.

Thanks for all your help guys!

I used it a lot on a fully rigid, riding fast over some long, rocky bridleways - I think it was more likely that my eyes would pop out from my head than the phone un-mounting itself from the Quadlock.

Another one for Quadlock, tried a couple of others and they were ok but QL is miles ahead. I also have a stick on mount for my car dashboard (not tried the car mount as I don't like things on the windscreen) to use phone as a sat-nav - unobtrusive and you can almost throw the phone at the mount once you are used to it!

I've got the QL case and used an otterbox case with a QL adaptor stuck to it. Both work really well but the QL case is quite low profile and you don't notice the "hole" in the case where it mounts. I actually like the hole in the back now as one of my fingers rests in it when holding the phone - feels weird to have a case without it now.

The system isn't cheap but I'll be buying again for sure.

I just cut four slots in a silicone case and fixed it to the stem with reusable zip ties. Total secure for about three quid.

I found it really hard to get the phone up to my ear with a bike attached to it...

You use a phone for phone calls?? That's so retro! 😉

Edit: in response to the question (although it was quite long and I didn't read it all) I just got the cheap b'twin one from decathlon. Was about £7 i think and very simple concept.

Quad lock +1: Survived a 3000km bike packing trip across New Zealand. I bought the waterproof cover but found it a bit fiddly and hardly used it.

Bit late and only just saying the same thing as everyone else but it's Quad Lock all the way. The case is excellent for day to day use and the bike mount is absolutely great. Also nice to get extra mounts so you can use it in the car as well.

Yep, its obvious perhaps but these are phone model specific!

I found the mechanism needs cleaning out every so often ... or perhaps that's just me faceplanting.

Despite these and all the accessories being over-priced in terms of what they cost to make I find them very good value in terms of what you get out of them.

Although it's usual use as SatNav, the last use for this was timing my kids practice DH runs riding behind him... it's that secure and I can see his time as he crosses the line.

After 2 yrs mounted (moved off other bike) its starting to rotate and I'm going to swap the zip ties... but the reason for this is it's hit the floor so many times and been rotated around... and yet the phone is still good.

The poncho is 3yrs old and starting to slightly yellow... so at some point i'll invest in a new poncho...
