Hi chaps,

I'm after a cheapish hardtail for local rides, and a bit of recovery riding on more XC stuff.

I had a BFE about 5 years ago as my only bike for about 6 months and loved it.

How's the reach measure up in real life? It looks a bit short, but the ETT is pretty long. At 5'11 I'm assuming I'd be on a Large these days.

Cheers

Ricks

Cotic currently have BFe's on £80 off: http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/BFe275#new

At 5'11" I'd say you were more of a medium than a large (Cotics sizing chart puts you in this size, see link). I'm 6' and have had 4 different frames all in med. the ETT is 614mm on medium (it's 17mm longer on the large). New frames are 'optimised for inline' which I think lengthens then slightly. Can't say I've heard of them being called short before.

I'm currently running Mk 1 Soul and Solaris so can't vouch for the new geo. In truth I find them both a little short in med in climbing mode as the front tends to be a bit light (that's with 65mm stem and 762 bars and layback pin, saddle pushed back...). Obviously this is reversed on descents 🙂

I was under the impression that folks sized as small as they could go on BFe's.

It all depends what you want to build it up with I guess?

As above they are on sale. I love my 2012 26-er ... given Cy's skills I can't beloeve the 275 is anything but excellent

It's all about big bikes now! I'd get a large if I were buying again and I'm just under 5'11.

Based on the 5 minute uphill shot I had on my mates large Soul27.5 I would be seriously thinking of going the same way... 😳

Obviously I'd need a couple proper goes on it to make my mind up though.

I have comparatively long legs which means lots of seat post and (fat) arse off the back...

I think there was a fad of getting bikes like a BFe quite small so it was "chuckabke" - I asked Cy/Paul what size to get and they said Medium which was perfect. Just ask them

I had a 26er Simple and at 5'11 found the large just right. I guess it depends if you want chuckable or more stretched out.

These are a chunk longer than the 26er Simple, both in reach and ETT.

Is that a metric chuck or an imperial chuck?

I have one. im also 5'11" and mines a medium. pic here http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/cotic-bfe-lets-see-yours

it does feel a litle bit small compared to my large kona process but not in a bad way, i wanted that contrast tbh. the reach is perfect tho.

5'10" here and medium is spot on
It's longer than both the medium Commencal Meta's I have owned, and longer than my old 17.5" One One Inbred
I asked Cy the same question and he suggested a medium and said it's designed with the seat tube angle such that seated it has quite a long ETT but stood up it becomes much shorter and 'chuckable'

The 275 has different (longer) geo than the old 26" version, there is a detailed blog about it on the Cotic website
