I had a 2019, plenty of use & abuse. Never had any issues with anything on the bike.

Even ploughed straight through deep puddles etc (zero care when riding).

It always got washed and looked after post ride tho I never actually needed to do anything with the electrical parts of it as they never had issues.

Yup I've got 1, the Yaris on the lower spec one are crap, pack down on repeated hits, and the shimano brakes of that era have wandering bite point issues. Go for the higher spec one with Lyrics and sram discs if you can.

Freehub on lower spec one didn't last long but replaced under warranty.

30 miles and 3000ft is about the limit range wise.

No issues with motor so far smashed the motor controller lever but replaced easy enough.

The bearings in the rear linkages don't like a jet wash but easy enough to replace, top seatstay ones are most vulnerable.

It's very much a plough through stuff kind of ride

A have a 2018, it's had a fair hammering and has just had motor no2 replaced. One of the best things I've ever bought to be honest, newer ebikes are a bit more integrated but ride wise I doubt there's that much in it to justify the crazy prices. Vitus had the geo close to perfect from the start.

Disagree it's a plough bike, in relation to other ebikes it's quite light and nimble for an eeb.

If your getting onto it from a normal bike, it’s a ploughing machine.

The weight difference from normal to E bike is noticeable but yes the E-sommet is pretty nimble still and great fun.

I’d recommend.

Yes, I have one... [stealth ad]
It's the high-spec one, size large, and I bought it brand new. It's been absolutely faultless and a pleasure to own.
Fancy buying it from me? I've not used for a while and need to make space for arrival of new motorcycle.

Thoroughly recommended, I have one a 2018 VRS, done 2k miles on it. Seemingly lighter than many newer bikes & the much more adaptable external battery. My real issue with it was the lack of range but it was my own fault I should have tuned the power down, as it was faster in eco than any of my friends bike, but I paid for it at the end of rides. So fit an uprated E8016 630w battery to extend the range, or buy a 2nd cheaper 500wh batteries, lots of them about as they're not fashionable. Only annoying issue with the actual frame, is that the seat tube isn't reamed right at the bottom, so you can't always get a dropper post all the way down.
It's now my back up e-bike

Whatever model you pick, I'm assuming 2nd hand, try to avoid the E7000 motor version as its not rebuildable. The E8000 motor can be rebuilt with bearing kits that are easily available. The E8000 motor will also work with E7000 electrical systems. Its fantastic downhill. Easily the fastest thing I have ever ridden. More than enough to scare yourself with.

I have a medium vr model. Bought it second hand from the trailhead last year and hardly ridden it but seems decent.

As above, 30 miles and 3000ft seems the limit of it using trail/ eco mainly, mine came with massive schwalbe eddy currents on so would probably have more range without those but they are incredible.

Absolutely no problems with electrics at all.

I’d part with mine as well if anyone was interested because I just don’t use it.

Thinking about buying one, going to view tomorrow.
Has the yaris the E7000 motor tho, so that's 2 negatives then!
For those that had motors replaced, warranty or paid out? Wonder how much new e7000/e8000 motors are?
I see spare batteries are circa 600 notes.
Will check pivot bearings and seat tube and give everything a once over and take it from there.
Cheers so far for help.

Madison replaced mine under warranty but pretty sure the warranty is none transferable, mine is a 2018 with the E8000 and has others have said it is relatively light for an ebike especially compared to bikes with integrated batteries, I often ride mine with the motor switched off, on a recent mixed group ride at Dalby we did 31 miles,I started with a not quite fully charged battery (85%) and still had 35% charge at the end of the ride so if you are prepared to put a bit of effort in you can certainly eke out the miles,I'm running 2.4 Michelin wild enduros which roll better than the 2.6 Butcher and Eliminator that I was using

An e8000 motor is around 1000 fitted from a Shimano dealer I think and they will only fit the same motor the bike came with. If its not from a dealer there's no warranty so bear that in mind with the ebay motors (even if they are new).

Some people on emtb forums have claimed on a warranty on a used bike. Just go to a Shimano dealer with a proof of purchase.

I took a punt and bought the bike. We'll see how it goes.
Thanks for the advice.
No receipt available for any potential 'warranty' work so bit of a gamble but that's the chance you take isn't it. 😂
Genuine seller btw, nowt dodgy!

@granny_ring Out of interest, what did you pay for it?

I'm looking at an eMTB and can't decide if I should go used or not. Just wondering what sorta saving you'd be looking at vs. buying new.

While I quite enjoy blasting about on ebikes (and would like one), I’m still not sure old risk a secondhand (or out of warranty) one. The current motors just don my seem reliable enough (and I am a fan of second hand bikes). Until the frame and motor warranties are longer and transferable imll be saving up for a new ebike.

I’m E only ridden the Whte e150/160c a Heckler and the E-Sommet and though all of them were pretty good (not sure I could justify the extra money to get more than the Vitus as it felt really nice to ride.

When the 2019 Sommet came out the lower spec version RRP was sub £3k, VRS was £3200 I think. Add on that most were bought using BC 10% discount codes and I doubt 2nd hand prices are much less than what was paid for them unless they're in poor condition.

Bearings for the frame are all standard type stuff and easy to locate, mech hangers and axles are same as standard Sommet of the era. There's nothing else that's bike specific that should be hard to come by or repair / replace.

E8000 motors and controllers seem to be do OK reliability wise.

I'd been thinking about getting a bike on bike to work scheme which starts next week.
Looking at the 4 year buy back factor, availability and general 4-5k cost of bike I was having second thoughts.
Yes you get warranty (2 years?) on motors etc which is a positive but I'm not sure I could justify the big outlay tbh.
Even 2nd prices are high I think, supply & demand doesn't help I guess?
Paid 2k, maybe a touch too much, as Bon said back in the day, we'll see.
Got some work on the drive chain to do first before I can get out.
